"Why do bad things happen to good people?" is a question which the Church has wrestled with for ages. The question is particularly poignant when people experience trauma. The paper attempts to address theodicy, especially in light of combat trauma, and proposes perhaps not a solution to the question, but a different way of examining the question.

From Post Traumatic Stress Disorder to Post Traumatic Healing

The key is to make sense, to find meaning and purpose of the trauma.  “Why did God allow this to happen?” is the key question of struggle for people of faith, or anyone with any semblance of knowledge of a God.

The answer is found scripturally – that God has an ultimate purpose and meaning to the suffering of humanity.  More importantly, that through the love of Christ, the Christian community can be the instrument of healing by: 1) being present with the sufferers, walking with them through the darkness, 2) providing a ritual of wholeness, a service of healing, and 3) helping the injured work through forgiveness of self, society, the enemy and God.

Finally, the traumatized can then grow by finding strength – not relying solely on one’s own inner strength, i.e. Stoics and Epictetus, but through the providential love and strength that comes from God by the Word (written, enfleshed, and proclaimed), the presence of the Holy Spirit, and through the Christian community.

The present study aims to examine the relationship between trait resilience and virtues in
the context of trauma. A total of 537 participants who attended the preliminary investigation
and completed the Life Events Checklist were screened. Of these participants, 142 suffered
from personal traumatic experiences in the past year; these individuals were qualified and
invited to respond to online questionnaires to assess trait resilience, virtues (i.e., Conscientiousness,
Vitality, and Relationship), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms,
and post-traumatic growth (PTG). The following questionnaires were used: Connor-Davidson
Resilience Scale-Revised, Chinese Virtues Questionnaire, PTSD Checklist-Specific,
and Post-traumatic Growth Inventory-Chinese. Only 95 participants who manifested self-reported
PTSD symptoms and PTG were involved in the current analyses. Trauma was positively
and significantly correlated with PTSD in the current sample. Results indicated that
trait resilience was positively associated with virtues and PTG; by contrast, PTSD scores
were negatively but not significantly related to most of these factors. The three virtues contributed
to PTG to a greater extent than trait resilience in non-PTSD and PTSD groups.
However, trait resilience remained a significant predictor in the PTSD group even when the
three virtues were controlled. The relationship between trait resilience and PTG was moderated
by PTSD type (non-PTSD group vs. PTSD group). Our results further suggested that
trait resilience and virtues were conceptually related but functionally different constructs.
Trait resilience and virtues are positively related; thus, these factors contributed variances
to PTG in the context of trauma; however, trait resilience is only manifested when virtues
are controlled and when individuals are diagnosed as PTSD. Furthermore, implications and
limitations of this study are discussed.

Objective. Relationship, vitality, and conscientiousness are three fundamental
virtues that have been recently identified as important individual differences to
health, well being, and positive development. This cross-sectional study attempted
to explore the relationship between the three constructs and post-traumatic growth
(PTG) in three directions, including indirect trauma samples without post-traumatic
stress disorder (PTSD), direct trauma samples without PTSD, and direct trauma
samples with PTSD.
Methods. A total of 340 community participants from Sichuan Province,Mainland
China involved in the study, most of which experienced Wenchuan and Lushan
Earthquake. Participants were required to complete the self-reported questionnaire
packages at one time point for obtaining their scores on virtues (Chinese Virtues
Questionnaire), PTSD (PTSD Checklist-Specific), and PTG (Post-traumatic Growth
Inventory-Chinese).
Results. Significant and positive correlations between the three virtues and PTG were
identified (r = .39–.56; p < .01). Further regression analysis by stepwise method
reveled that: in the indirect trauma samples, vitality explained 32% variance of
PTG. In reference to the direct trauma sample without PTSD, both relationship and
conscientiousness explained 32% variance of PTG, whereas in the direct trauma
sample with PTSD, only conscientiousness accounted for 31% the variance in PTG.
Conclusion.This cross-sectional investigation partly revealed the roles of
different virtues in trauma context. Findings suggest important implications for
strengths-based treatment.

The book deals with the marginalization of a minority tribal group (the Lodhas) in the West Bengal state of India and the role of a democratic welfare state in improving the living conditions of the tribe. The Lodha tribal community of West Bengal has a long history of drawing the attention of administrators, anthropologists, social activists and the media. In the colonial times, this community was designated as a ‘criminal tribe’ and carried the social stigma during the post-colonial period, although the Government created category after category (e.g. ‘Denotified’ and ‘Primitive Tribal Group’) to designate this marginalized community. The grass root level reality, which emerged from media reports, anthropologists’ accounts and activists’ literature, revealed that the marginalization of the Lodhas continued long after the Independence of the country. Aim: To establish the association between war traumatic experiences, post-traumatic
stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms and post-traumatic growth among nurses in the
Gaza Strip, 2 years after an incursion on Gaza, and during a period of ongoing trauma
exposure. This study builds on existing evidence by considering exposure to personal
and work-related traumatic events, and on factors associated with later positive
psychological adaptation. Methods: The sample consisted of 274 randomly selected
nurses in Gaza who completed the Gaza Traumatic Events Checklist, PTSD Checklist,
and Posttraumatic Growth Inventory. Results: Of the nurses, 19.7% reported full
PTSD. There was a significant relationship between traumatic events and PTSD
scores; as well as between community-related traumatic events and post-traumatic
growth. Participants reported a range of traumatic events, but PTSD and posttraumatic
growth scores were more strongly associated with community rather than
work-related traumas. Discussion: Nursing professionals experienced high levels of
distress 2 years following an acute period of conflict, both as civilians and in their
health-care capacity. Implications for Practice: There is need for different levels of
support for health-care staff in war-affected areas. Mental health nursing professionals
have a central role in training, counselling and support to other health-care colleagues.

Many computational solutions can be expressed as Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG), in which nodes represent tasks to be executed and edges represent precedence constraints among tasks. A Cluster of processors is a shared resource among several users and hence the need for a scheduler which deals with multi-user jobs presented as DAGs. The scheduler must find the number of processors to be allotted for each DAG and schedule tasks on allotted processors. In this work, a new method to find optimal and maximum number of processors that can be allotted for a DAG is proposed. Regression analysis is used to find the best possible way to share available processors, among suitable number of submitted DAGs. An instance of a scheduler for each DAG, schedules tasks on the allotted processors. Towards this end, a new framework to receive online submission of DAGs, allot processors to each DAG and schedule tasks, is proposed and experimented using a simulator. This space-sharing of processors among multiple DAGs shows better performance than the other methods found in literature. Because of spacesharing, an online scheduler can be used for each DAG within the allotted processors. The use of online scheduler overcomes the drawbacks of static scheduling which relies on inaccurate estimated computation and communication costs. Thus the proposed framework is a promising solution to perform online scheduling of tasks using static information of DAG, a kind of hybrid scheduling.

Regression analysis is used to find the best possible way to share available processors, among suitable number of submitted workflows. An instance of a scheduler is created for each workflow, which schedules tasks on the allotted processors. Towards this end, a new framework to receive online submission of workflows, to allot processors to each workflow and schedule tasks, is proposed and experimented using a discrete-event based simulator. This space-sharing of processors among multiple workflows shows better performance than the other methods
found in literature. Because of space-sharing, an instance of a scheduler must be used for each workflow within the allotted processors. Since the number of processors for each workflow is known only during runtime, a static schedule can not be used. Hence a hybrid scheduler which tries to combine the advantages of static and dynamic scheduler is proposed. Thus the proposed framework is a promising solution to multiple workflows scheduling on cluster.

This is a problem focused and applied study regarding the impact of various development inputs (e.g. land distribution, housing, solar energy, rainwater harvesting, domestic animal etc.) given and monitored by the governmental and non-governmental agencies to a small, economically backward and socially marginalised scheduled tribe of West Bengal named Lodha. The scheduled tribe has recently been categorised by the Government as a ‘Primitive Tribal Group’(PTG).The marginalisation of this tribal community has a historical background which has been explored in the introductory chapter of the book.

The empirical survey for the study was conducted in three administrative blocks, viz. Binpur II, Nayagram and Narayangargh within the administrative boundary of the Paschim (West) Medinipur district of West Bengal state of India. The impact of the developmental inputs in this research has been studied empirically through anthropological fieldwork at three levels.

At the first level, all the developmental inputs were enlisted in the selected study areas along with the collection of basic socio-demographic and economic data.

The second level of enquiry dealt with the analysis and interpretation of field data on the actual utilisation of the enlisted developmental inputs were collected along with views of the beneficiary community in the selected field areas.

At the third level, an attempt has been made to assess the impact of the various developmental inputs by comparing the developmental scenario in the three selected areas which also provided an opportunity to study the variation within the same community in terms of utilisation of the development inputs in the three different locations of the same district within the state of West Bengal. At this level, an attempt has also been made to recommend some measures for the better utlilisation of development inputs for the socioeconomic improvement of the Lodhas of Paschim Medinipur in West Bengal. 

This study has both practical and policy relevance since Central and State Governments have sanctioned different schemes for the overall development of the Lodhas of West Bengal. Interestingly, the implementation of these schemes suffered setback in various places of West Bengal. There has been very few or almost no attempt to assess the reasons behind the failures towards the implementations these developmental inputs among the Lodhas.

This research is designed specifically to assess the impact of development programmes among the Lodhas. In this study we have also made an attempt to point out some of the basic problems towards the implementation of developmental schemes planned and executed by the respective departments of the State and local self Governments designated as Panchayat.

Finally, with the findings of this study, we have made an attempt to suggest certain measures which may be adopted by the Government for the successful implementation of the developmental inputs for the improvement of the socio-economic and living conditions of this small and marginalised community of West Bengal.
