moreEarly Quakerism is replete with stories of the Valiant 60 who achieved rapid success in establishing the Quaker faith in the 1650s. Unfortunately the crucial missionary role of ordinary Quaker men and women in the establishment and consolidation of early Quakerism has not received the same recognition. Their missionary activity, and support to new members and the fledgling congregations, enlarged and undergirded the gains of the Valiant 60. These ‘everyday Valiants’ accepted the challenge given by George Fox to “All Friends and Brethren everywhere ... [to] be bold and valiant for the Truth.” The Valiant 60 laid the groundwork; local members secured their efforts.
