“Discourses” of female students about computers: their experiences from the field of education

Abstract
This paper explores the female students’ knowledge constructions about the decreased presence of girls and young women in fields regarding new technologies and especially the computer section in Greece. For that reason I was addressed to 40 female students of the first year of the Philosophy and Education Department of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. They were participating in the seminar class “Informatics” and we discussed in focus groups about their previous experience with computers both inside and outside the school environment, how they feel towards computers and finally how do they explain the fact that the most frequent computer users are boys. The discourse analysis we have applied as a method tool, showed a reason that seems to be in the way that while those young women see the usefulness of the applications of the computers in everyday life and in the science field, nevertheless they say they don’t want to waste their time with the new situation that are created...
