SAT-solving is a highly actual research area with increasing success and plenty of industrial applications. SMT-solving, extending SAT with theories, has its main focus on linear real constrains. However, there are only few solvers going further to more expressive but still decidable logics like the first-order theory of the reals with addition and multiplication. The main requests on theory solvers that must be fulfilled for their efficient embedding into an SMT solver are (a) incrementality, (b) the efficient computation of minimal infeasible subsets, and (c) the support of backtracking. For the first-order theory of the reals we are not aware of any solver offering those functionalities. In this work we address the possibilities to extend existing theory solving algorithms to come up with a theory solver suited for SMT.

I-RiSC: an SMT-compliant solver for the existential fragment of real algebra2011 •
This paper connects research in computer science in the field of SAT-modulo-theories (SMT) solving and research in mathematics on decision procedures for real algebra. We consider a real algebraic decision procedure computing all realizable sign conditions of a set of polynomials. We modify this procedure so that it satisfies certain requirements needed for the embedding into an SMT-solver.

There are several methods for the synthesis and analysis of hybrid systems that require efficient algorithms and tools for satisfiability checking. For analysis, e.g., bounded model checking describes counterexamples of a fixed length by logical formulas, whose satisfiability corresponds to the existence of such a counterexample. As an example for parameter synthesis, we can state the correctness of a parameterized system by a logical formula; the solution set of the formula gives us possible safe instances of the parameters. For discrete systems, which can be described by propositional logic formulas, SAT-solvers can be used for the satisfiability checks. For hybrid systems, having mixed discrete-continuous behavior, SMT-solvers are needed. SMT-solving extends SAT with theories, and has its main focus on linear arithmetic, which is sufficient to handle, e.g., linear hybrid systems. SMT Solving for Arithmetic Theories: Theory and Tool Support2017 •
Satisfiability checking aims to develop algorithms and tools for checking the satisfiability of logical formulas. Driven by the impressive success of SAT solvers for proposi- tional logic, Satisfiability-Modulo-Theories (SMT) solvers were developed to extend the scope also to different theories. Today, SMT solving is widely used in many applications, for example verification, synthesis, planning or product design automation. In this tutorial paper we give a short introduction to the foundations of SMT solving, describe some popular SMT solvers and illustrate their usage. We also present our own solver SMT-RAT, which was developed to support the strategic combination of different decision procedures, putting a focus on arithmetic theories.

We discuss the topic of unsatisfiability proofs in SMT, particularly with reference to quantifier free non-linear real arithmetic. We outline how the methods here do not admit trivial proofs and how past formalisation attempts are not sufficient. We note that the new breed of local search based algorithms for this domain may offer an easier path forward.
