Albinism is a genetically inherited condition that reduces the amount of melanin pigment produced in the body, feathers and eyes of birds. Albinism is caused by a mutation in genes that interfere in the expression of the type and concentration of a pigment. In birds, this alteration causes the absence of colour in the feathers and other body parts and occurs at a very low frequency (Buckley,1982; Beltzer, 1984 and Avizanda et al., 2010). Due to the lack of melanin production in both the retinal pigmented epithelium (RPE) and iris, albinos typically have red eyes. In contrast, other alterations in the plumage pigmentation, such as leucism, result from defects in pigment cells in the feathers during development.
The nest construction pattern at different stages of nest and variations in the nest microclimate i.e., temperature and light intensity were assessed in different nests of Baya weaver (Ploceus philippinus) between November 2002 and March 2003 in Nagapattinam and Tiruvarur District of Tamil Nadu, India. The Baya weaver constructed nests in palm (Borassus flabellifer), coconut (Cocos nucifera) and date palm trees (Phoneix psuilla) and majority of the nests were found in the solitary palm. The male bird onlyinvolved in the construction and took 18 days to construct a single nest. The birds spent different amount of working hours (in terms of days) for completing various stages of nests viz., wad, ring and helmet stage and in which the ‘helmet stage took a maximum of eight days. Furthermore, totally eight active nests were selected and once in a week the variations in the nest microclimate was investigated with reference to atmospheric temperature and light intensity (two active nests) across day throughout the study period. The mean temperature of the nests ranged from 25 C to 29 C and light intensity varied between 25 Lux and 625Lux. The analysis of variance (ANOVA and ANCOVA) indicated that the nest microclimate varied among the nests in different hr of a day.

Nest characters, nesting success and parental care in some birds at Swami Ramanand Teerth Marathwada University, Nanded, Maharashtra2017 •
Nest is one of the essential need for nidicolous species of birds having altrical youngs. It is especially used for breeding and parental care. Nest characters of some Passerine bird species were examined and resource utilization for the purpose was correlated. The nesting success in S. R. T. M. University, Nanded Maharashtra was in the range of 0.42 % to 1.64 % in four different areas. Overall nesting success was 5.56 % in 650 acres area which is quite higher than earlier studies mainly in forest areas in India. This study was limited to specific types of nests rather than common nests of Baya weaver (Plocius phillippinus) abundantly found in the region. The birds use easily available material from the nesting site to construct nest this also implies the non availability of material is limiting factor for the nesting in birds which was found in Area 3 of the selected site. Starting from nesting, egg laying to fledging three species of birds Red vented Bulbul, Spotted Dove and Tailo...

First record of brown plumage aberration in Indian Pied Starling (Gracupica contra) from India2023 •
Brown aberration in black plumage is defined by the progressive reduction of eumelanin in birds. The present report describes an observation of plumage with brown aberration in Indian Pied Starling (Gracupica contra) from the agricultural landscape of Shokliya village, Rajasthan, India. The observed individual exhibited browning in all the areas of the plumage that are normally black in this species, including the head, wing feathers, and tail feathers. However, feathers with no pigmentation remained white and unaffected. Genetic and dietary factors are thought to be major factors responsible for such aberrations in birds, but more research is needed to determine the exact reasons.

Many studies have been undertaken regarding color aberrations in birds. Scientists define six most common heritable colour aberrations in birds as Albinism, Leucism, Brown, Dilution, Ino and Melanism. Several times the plumage colours are not the result of mutations or pigmentations and are described as artificial discoloration. This may result due to dust-bathing in industrial areas polluted with cinder dust, ash and soot. Dust bathing is a common and important behavior of House Sparrows. Apparently, this behaviour, has led to many cases of discoloration in House Sparrows (Passer domesticus) that have been reported from Jhansi district of Uttar Pradesh, India in 2017. The House sparrows were photographed and compared with literary data. The information was also shared with renowned scientist Dr. H V Grouw to get his opinion. The discoloured Sparrows appeared to be melanistic (Increase of black and/or reddish brown) and Ino-dark (Black and brown becomes pale brown and reddish). But ...
