Contribution to disseminate the relevant role of new digital technologies in the interpretation of rock art sites, namely through photogrammetry and the use of the Morphological Residue Model (MRM). The author presents the results of the application of this method in the Mu mountain area (Almodôvar), at a rock formation known as “Pedra da Lua” (Moonstone), where 25 fossettes / “little holes” made by abrasion and pricking are represented. The site is contextualised within the local geomorphology and related with other archaeological evidence found in the area. KEY WORDS: Rock art; Comet; Methodology.

Abstract: Northern Portugal has been considered by many researchers as an area of convergence of two Prehistoric rock-art traditions - Atlantic Art and Schematic Art- which echo wider connections at an European scale. In North-western Iberia, their distribution seems to be largely complementary. Atlantic Art and Schematic Art are general concepts, grounded upon a certain similarity as far as motif designs are concerned, but lack a more accurate definition regarding their integration in the historical development of the communities who symbolically shaped the landscape through painting or carving those images on rocks. Our study area, Western Trás-os-Montes, may be regarded as a ‘transition area’ between the two regions of greatest concentration of occurrences of either tradition: Atlantic Art is dominant in North-west Portugal and Galicia (Spain) whereas Schematic Art paintings tend to concentrate in North-east Portugal, as an extension of the reality in the Iberian Central plateau- the ‘Meseta’. However, the rock art assemblage in Western Trás-os-Montes shows a substantial formal diversity, reflecting considerable spatial and chronological asymmetries, thus demanding a preliminary attempt of systematisation. In addition, there are only a few monographic studies although site information is abundant but widespread. This paper aims to fulfil that task at some extent, starting from a literature review and an analysis of the current state of knowledge, as a means to contextualise the evidence within the wider debate on the post-glacial rock art in the North of Portugal. Keywords: Northern Portugal; Western Trás-os-Montes; Rock art.
This article intends to make a systematization of the several archaeological sites with rock art known in the territory between the Atlantic and the Maciço Calcário Estremenho, that is, in the Portuguese Extremadura. Analyzing the dispersion of the sites, it is clear that the geological characteristics totally condition the existence of sites with rock art, being notable its absence for example in alluvial regions, as well as the type of limestone in the region of Lisbon and the West that make it impossible the preservation of paintings or engravings. Although there are three references in the region of Lisbon (Magoito, Anta da Pedra dos Mouros and Laje das Insculturas), only when we move to the north we find archaeological sites in the Maciço Calcário Estremenho (Lapa dos Coelhos, Vale do Lapedo and Gruta da Moeda), and continue to the region of the Maciço Hespérico where there are numerous rock art sites (Pego da Rainha, Vale do Tejo, Ocreza and Erges). We emphasize the chronological uniformity of the studied archaeological sites, essentially framed in the recent Prehistory, with few contexts with paleolithic art, which corresponds to different strategies of symbolic anthropization of the territory. Key-words: Rock Art; Engraving; Painting; Prehistoric period; Vale do Tejo; Estremadura

Until the end of the twentieth century, the archaeological work carried out at the municipality of Proença-a-Nova was characterized by episodic, discontinuous or inconclusive interventions. As examples of this in the first decade of the century, the records made by Francisco Tavares de Proença Jr., the inventory of megalithic monuments produced by Georg and Vera Leisner probably during the 1940’s, but only published by the end of the century, and occasional news or studies under the responsibility of other researchers. Most recently, from the late 1970’s until the present day, one should mention the surveys undertaken by the Associação de Estudos do Alto Tejo, and, this century already, the contribution provided by environmental impact assessment studies of several projects. In recent years, archaeological research in the territory of Proença-a-Nova took on new dimensions as a result of the commitment of the municipality of Proença-a-Nova with the Associação de Estudos do Alto Tejo, by establishing a longer term course of action. In this context, it was possible to extend the knowledge of the archaeological heritage of Proença-a-Nova in three different areas: (1) the development of an inventory of archaeological sites at the municipal level; (2) the study and promotion of megalithic graves, priority given to those integrated into the pedestrian path created by the municipality at Moitas, called “The History in the Landscape”; and, (3) the study and promotion of military structures (eighteenth-nineteenth centuries) belonging to the Defensive Line of Talhadas-Moradal. This program culminated in 2012 with the creation of Proença-a-Nova International Archaeological Field Camp, whose fourth edition, covering the year 2015, included a diversified program, with excavation works performed at the megalithic monuments of Cabeço da Anta and Vale de Alvito (fourth to third millennium BC), at the eighteenth century fort overlooking the Alvito bridge, and at the walled enclosure of Chão de Galego (second to first millennium BC). The latter illustrates the intention to expand the investigation to the knowledge of this territory ancient settlement patterns.

Grafismos Rupestres Pré-históricos no Baixo Erges (Idanha-a-Nova, Portugal) / Prehistoric rock carvings at low river ErgesThis paper presents the results of an archaeological prospection conducted by the Upper Tagus Study Association along a portion of the River Erges located between Segura and the position corresponding to the Portuguese bank at Arroyo Boqueron (Spain), some 2 km upstream from where the Erges joins the Tagus. The aim was both to continue the extensive archaeological cartography project begun in the region in 1977, and also to identify prehistoric rock carvings, following an unsuccessful incursion in the 1970s at the time when the so-called Tagus Rock Art Complex was discovered in Vila Velha de Ródão and Nisa. With this work along the River Erges, it was possible to identify various groups of motifs: symbolic-geometric (simple and concentric circles); anthropomorphic, some of which are anchor-shaped; possibly zoomorphic; pecking (dispersed or in patches), and filiform shapes. Although the carvings were limited in number and diversity, most of these motifs may be correlated with the schematic art of the Tagus. Indeed, the discovery provides evidence of the expansion upstream of the limit of the Holocenic rock art complex detected along the River Tagus and its tributaries during the 1970s. Current knowledge concerning the distribution and quantities of these prehistoric rock carvings on the River Tagus suggests that the core of this symbolic complex would have been located on the banks of the great river, and that there would have been less expression, and more marginal in nature, along the tributaries. However, the discoveries made on both banks of the River Erges reinforce the hypothesis that the International Tagus contains clusters that are as expressive as those of the Portuguese Tagus. Unfortunately, though, this will only be provable with deactivation of the Cedillo dam. The rock carvings identified on the River Erges clearly result from the dense prehistoric occupation of the International Tagus at that time, as identified in the surrounding area, both in Portugal and in Spain. This context includes various types of megalithic monuments, particularly burial sites (in some of which were also identified rock carvings in the area of Cáceres) and habitats on the detrital platforms around Rosmaninhal (Idanha-a-Nova). The anthropomorphic representations, which are the most expressive and chronologically reliable of that group, may be slotted into the Final Neolithic-Chalcolithic (IV and III millennium BC), in accordance with the periods suggested by António Martinho Baptista (Stage II, megalithic) and Mário Varela Gomes (southern period).
