With a population nearing 100 million, people in Egypt feel the pressure of lacking social services, infrastructure, educational facilities, and housing. Most Uber drivers, all men in their 20s and early 30s, drive part-time to augment their income from working in factories and government offices and to support their families. Some are unable to find steady employment since graduating from university and instead chose to finance a car and drive for Uber. They are fed up.

Inflection has been traditionally at the core of interest of morphologists of all persuasions and theoretical frameworks, and historical morphology is no exception. The aim of this chapter is twofold. On the one hand, it is to provide a typological overview of the diachronic pathways leading to the most widely attested inflectional features such as number and case with nouns or person and tense with verbs. Thus I offer a by necessity brief and superficial summary of the wide and developing domain of research on grammaticalisation paths of the most important nominal and verbal inflectional categories. On the other hand, I try to tackle from a diachronic perspective the more fundamental question of the very nature of inflection and inflectional categories and what (if anything) makes inflection a special kind of morphology (if at all).
