Introduction: Milo count of Bar-sur-Seine founded the female priory of Jully-les-Nonnains1, around 1115. Dependent on Molesme abbey, Jully-les-Nonnains is supported from the beginning by many donors. Between 1115 and 1200, seventy-one documents relating to the priory are listed : six pontifical letters, four acts of foundation, fifty-two donation charters, and nine different others documents. This presentation will be focused on the donation charters. Questionning: Firstly, it’s essential to understand if the charters are addressed specifically to the nuns. And, if it’s possible to find indications that link these documents to a female priory. The other point to study is the place of women in this documentation: how many times women's names are cited compared to men's names? Methodology: The purpose of this presentation is to see if these acts correspond to an usual pattern or if the feminine character of the priory influenced the way they were written. It will be necessary to compile statistics on the number of men's and women's mentions. And, on another hand, we’ll compare these charters with acts from male priory dependent on Molesme to see if we can find the same kind of pattern. Conclusion: So, this presentation will serve a dual purpose: quantifying the place of women in donations relating to Jully-the-Nonnains and identifying if there is a gender pattern in these documents.

After the fall of Constantinople to the Latin Crusaders in 1204 hundreds of relics were carried into the West as diplomatic gifts, memorabilia and tokens of victory. Yet many relics were also sent privately between male crusaders and their spouses and female kin. As recipients of relics women were often called upon to initiate new relic cults and practices of commemoration in honour of the men who sent these objects and who often never returned from the East. By considering the material quality of Fourth Crusade relics, this article argues that they were objects that exercised a profound effect on the lives of those receiving them, influencing their perceptions and actions, focusing practices of commemoration and ultimately shaping the memory of the crusade. Relics formed the scaffolding that recursively evoked a venerated martyr, a kinsman dead in the East, a family’s crusading lineage, and broader ideas of religious sacrifice.

Monica H. Green, “Getting to the Source: The Case of Jacoba Felicie and the Impact of the Portable Medieval Reader on the Canon of Medieval Women’s History” (2006)2006 •
This essay was written to honor the late Mary Martin McLaughlin (d. 2006), a pioneer in retrieving records of medieval women’s activities and agency from the past. Jacoba Felicie (or as her name would have been given in her native French, Jacqueline Felicie) was a medical practitioner in Paris who was brought up on charges of illicit medical practice in 1322. Although not the first to discover her (that happened back in the late 19th century), McLaughlin was the first to put into modern English a partial account of Jacoba’s trial record in her Portable Medieval Reader, first published in 1949. Importantly, there was never any suggestion that Jacoba had actually harmed anyone through the care that she gave them. Rather, she was accused, essentially, of acting just like a learned (male) physician. In terms of the historiography on Jacoba, I document that most references to her draw on secondary literature rather than on the original Latin documents or even McLaughlin’s translation. Hence, there is considerable distortion of her narrative. In a later essay (“Conversing with the Minority: Relations among Christian, Jewish, and Muslim Women in the High Middle Ages,” Editor’s Preface to a special issue of Journal of Medieval History 34, no. 2 (June 2008), 105-18), I note that I myself erred in not better contextualizing Jacoba in this essay. Specifically, I failed to note that among those tried for illegal medical practice alongside Jacoba were a Jewish woman practitioner and a recent female convert. For an analysis of the negative effect of Ehrenreich and English's manifesto, *Witches, Midwives, and Nurses,* in feminist historiography, see Monica H. Green, “Gendering the History of Women’s Healthcare,” Gender and History, Twentieth Anniversary Special Issue, 20, no. 3 (November 2008), 487-518.
