FINAL PROOF of my article on the rise of Dál Cais until Brian Bóraime, based on a wide range of historical sources and with a new explanation as to how they were able to become such a dominant force in Munster and Ireland. This is followed by a discussion how their legendary history was forged in genealogical records and narrative literature. Several of these sources are closely connected and can be dated to the reign of Brian Bóraime (around 1000). NB quite a fewl errors remain in the final draft, the published version is more trustworthy.

The ríg Érenn – the “Kings of Ireland” – denotes not the “normal” regional or provincial kings, but the Irish High-Kings, whose extended de jure if not always de facto over the whole of Ireland. Though the actual status of high-king is recorded in the sources for certain of these kings, that of others is more controversial. The tradition ascribes the ríg Érenn a continuity from the mythological pre-history up to the 13th century. Notwithstanding the fact that a wide range of evidence (such as manuscripts, inscriptions, engravings and charters) bears witness to the ríg Érenn, it is difficult to determine with certainty where exactly the line between fictitious, mythic and real historical kings is to be drawn. The present study, in which a total of 279 kings and three queens are investigated, constitutes the first ever comprehensive survey of the high-kingship regnal lists of medieval Ireland. Irish high-kings play a role in nearly all medieval narratives and text genres so that the powerful idea of the high-kingship itself is what effectuates the richness and longevity of the medieval Irish tradition. Of particular importance in this process are the extensive historiographical poems that reflect textual deviations attributable to their oral transmission within different schools of historiography. Volume One gathers and analyses all relevant written witnesses, while many others are edited with German translation in the Volume Two. Thus, the reader gains an overview over nearly all historiographical sources for the Irish Middle Ages including the manifold intertextual references and the branching out of narrative themes within the medieval literary canon. The present study is therefore a unique work of reference. The present book is oriented not only towards Celticists, but also towards Medievalists and historians in general, as well as readers with a deep interest in the medieval history of Ireland.

The aim of this M.A. thesis is to provide a first attempt at a critical edition of the version of the poem ‘Flann for Éirinn’ included in recension b of Lebor Gabála Érenn. In establishing the text, the three manuscripts containing this version have been used as a basis, while two other copies belonging to other recensions of LGÉ have also been consulted. The edition is accompanied by an introduction dealing with general aspects of the poem, a translation, detailed notes on the text, the transcriptions of all the copies used and indexes of names.
