The two case studies here collected provide the occasion for presenting the research work carried out by The Epigraphic Landscape of Athens Project, focused on the re- lationship between public epigraphy and urban spaces in ancient Athens. The first part, by Chiara Lasagni, focuses on the honorary decrees and statues voted by the Athenian Demos in the years 287-262, and attempts to outline some key coordinates about the epigraphic and ideological landscape produced after the revolt from Demetrius. The second part, by Stefano Tropea, deals with the evolution of the epigraphical landscape of the Athenian asty in the decades from the battle of Pydna of 168 to the second half of the I c. BC.

The correspondence wa...

La nascita e l’evoluzione della cultura epigrafica in Magna Grecia: documenti, temi, sfide e prospettive.2020 •
This study aims to illustrate the rise and the early developments of the epigraphic culture in Magna Graecia. It will pay special attention to the social roots, aspects and implications of these two highly complex phenomena, which are involved in the wider events of the rise and the early evolution of the Greek alphabet. For this purpose, the work will take into examination some meaningful documents, in order to highlight, occasions, contexts, means, ways and practices related to the use of writing.

This article intends to draw the scholars’ attention to the main contents and features of the research project The Epigraphic Landscape of Athens (University of Turin), and of the relevant online database ELA: www.epigraphiclandscape.unito.it. The article is divided into four parts. In the first one, a general overview of the project is provided: by means of an extensive mapping of the places of the original display and discovery of the Athenian public inscriptions, performed through the ELA Database, the research project intends to outline a ‘virtual map’ of ancient Athens as a ‘written space'. The second part of the article is devoted to the ELA Database, of which it describes both the back-end environment (data entry boards and other tools) and the front-end environment (browse/search functions). The third part provides a brief account of the current state of the works, as far as it concerns both the database population work, and the presence of recurring phaenomena, that are emerging as possible interpretative keys in the reconstruction of the Athenian epigraphic landscape. The fourth part is devoted to a series of case studies, taken from a group of decrees (IG II3 1, 1135-1186) issued between 229/8 and 197/6 BCE, and currently published in the ELA Database; this section is intended to show how the information about the original location of the epigraphic monument, which represents the key-data of each document, is very often the result of an in-depth analysis of the inscription, which takes into account archaeological and material, as well as historical and textual data.

"When discussing the topography of Athens, one thinks first of all of Judeich (1931) and Travlos (1971), still an inevitable point of departure for any attempt at a synthesis. And such an attempt would still not be possible without recourse to other invaluable texts by Wachsmuth, Milchhöfer, Cavvadias and Kawerau, Dörpfeld, Della Seta, and Graindor, to mention only a few of the protagonists of investigations on ancient Athens, or without the analytical work carried out by the Americans on the Agora, by the Germans on the Kerameikos, and by the Greeks on the Acropolis and in the city – especially during the building of the subway –, or the excellent general overviews by Camp (2001) and Etienne (2004). This study has the ambition of representing the topographical history of Athens without neglecting the contribution of a whole range of disciplines and viewpoints, and without forgetting to take account of written sources, not only per se, but in the light of the variety of interpretations resulting from different approaches - anthropological, political-historical, economic and religious. It is hence not a mere update, but a work that intends to rethink the history of the Athenian urban space employing new approaches and critically verifying all the opinions put forward in earlier studies. The book includes many photographs and images - almost all reworked -, which make it easier to follow the text. In addition to these, in the outer pockets of each volume are detailed area plans and, in the fourth volume, a general archaeological map of the Asty."
