Placas columnares de crinoideos de la Formación Las Delicias, Pérmico inferior y medio de Coahuila, México2021 •
Thirteen parataxa of crinoid plates from two localities of the lower-middle Permian of the Las Delicias Formation are described. Both zones are situated in Sierra de las Delicias, to southwestern Coahuila state. The parataxa Pentagonopternix coahuilensis n. sp., Cyclocaudex typicus, C. insaturatus, C. cf. insaturatus, Cyclocaudex sp., Floricyclus diminuta n. sp., Floricyclus sp. Preptopremnum rugosum, P. laeve, Preptopremnum sp., Heterostelechus keithi, Cyclocaudiculus regularis and Epicrinus torreonense new genus and species were found in Las Difuntas locality of the middle Permian (Wordian–Capitanian) whereas Cyclocaudex typicus, C. sp., Preptopremnum laeve and Epicrinus torreonense were also found in Las Sardinas locality whose strata have been dated as early Permian (Kungurian-Roadian). The occurrence of all parataxa in strata from the middle Permian of the Las Delicias Formation allowed extending their stratigraphic range until the Wordian–Capitanian. Most species described hav...

Board games of the Vikings – From hnefatafl to chess2018 •
The relationship between the Viking game hnefatafl and the new board game of chess is an intricate one, made all the more so by the fact that both are described by the same term: tafl. In this paper, I focus both on the archaeological and the literary evidence for the two board games and the diagnostic features that set them apart. At the outset, the famous reference to tafl by Kali Kolsson, the future Earl Rǫgnvaldr of Orkney, is highlighted, and it is argued that Kali actually meant skaktafl, i.e. chess, when he used this term. The Ballinderry board from Ireland and the Ockelbo rune-stone from Sweden are subsequently presented as typical examples of the Viking game hnefatafl. Part of the discussion dwells on the eddic poem Vǫlospa and the symbolic value of the golden gaming pieces, which, I argue, reflect the Nordic memory culture of the Viking Age. In what follows, the most important evidence for chess in the North is addressed: the Lewis chessmen. A consideration of all these va...

Looking for connections between Arabia and East Asia: diplomatic gifts, luxury vessels and utilitarian wares unearthed at the city port of al-Balīd, Sultanate of Oman2022 •
Over the last few years the Chinese porcelain found in ports and urban centres involved in inter-Asian trade along the Indian Ocean routes, together with material from the wrecks of merchant ships and collections, has offered ample evidence for the study of the cultural, economic and social relations between the various entities involved in this network of commercial and diplomatic exchanges. This is particularly true for the period preceding the advent of the European powers along these routes and their subsequent predominance as from the 16th century. It is a period that is increasingly being studied to re-evaluate the globalization processes in the ancient world. Here, Chinese porcelain represents material evidence that we can, without the least exaggeration, define as incomparable. In fact, the origins of and trade in raw materials and technologies, the hybridization of decorative motives and forms, and the wide-ranging diffusion and re-elaboration of practices and meanings associated with Chinese porcelain and stoneware, attest to intercultural dynamics and a global or, better, glocal utilization of these materials. In the broader context of relations between China and the Arabian Peninsula, few sites offer such remarkable leads for analysis of the connections between the production, reception, and use of Chinese porcelain during the Islamic period. This article focuses mainly on the period between 1279 and 1435, which saw the trade between China and Arabia, together with the consumption and impact of Chinese porcelain on the southern coast of the Arabian Peninsula, at its most flourishing.
