This lesson plan deals with the following: Theoretical foundations for teaching literature at the middle and high school levels; consideration of principles and practices in teaching short stories, novels, drama, biography and non-fiction; special consideration of thematic connections in teaching literature; strategies for organizing courses in literature. COURSE OBJECTIVES: To help students understand and apply: 1. Theoretical foundations for teaching literature 2. Principles of teaching literature 3. Literature involvement strategies 4. Reader response strategies COURSE OUTCOMES: 1. Students will be able to explain and apply principles for teaching literature to middle and high school students. 2. Students will be able to read and analyze practical strategies for teaching literature and deduce the theoretical principles on which they are based. 3. Students will be able to locate, design and compile practical classroom strategies for teaching short stories, poetry, drama, biographies, autobiographies, and nonfiction in middle and high school. 4. Students will be able to design a thematic unit for teaching short literacy selections to middle or high school students. 5. Students will be able to design a teaching plan for a middle or high school novel. 6. Students will be able to design a poetry unit for middle or high school students. REQUIRED TEXTS: Handouts from 2 books from the STANDARDS CONSENSUS SERIES Published by NATIONAL COUNCIL OF TEACHERS OF ENGLISH A. Teaching Literature in Middle School B. Teaching Literature in High School CLASS POLICIES: ALL ASSIGNMENTS MUST BE TURNED IN ON TIME. ALL ASSIGNMENTS MUST BE TYPED. YOU MUST ATTEND CLASS.
