PRAGMATICS Created by: Rizkiani Aulia : 1053 5110 52 18 BG 6B ENGLISH DEPARTMENT THE FACULTY OF TEACHER TRAINING AND EDUCATION UNIVERSITAS MUHAMMADIYAH MAKASSAR Maret , 2021 1. Definition of Pragmatics by Expert Each expert has an opinion about the different definitions of pragmatics as defined by Yule (1996: 3), cites some pragmatics definitions, namely (1) a field that examines the meaning of the speaker, (2) a field that examines the meaning according to the context, (3) field, beyond the study of meaning which is uttered, examines the meaning of the communicated or communicated by the speaker, and (4) field that examines forms of expression by restricting the social distance participants involved in a particular conversation. As has been argued that pragmatics cannot get out of context, so it must be in accordance with the context which is communicated to the speakers. Crystal (1987: 120) states that pragmatics studies the factors that govern our language choices in social interactions and the influence of our choices on others. In theory we can express what we want. In practice, we follow a large number of social rules (mostly unconsciously) that constrain the way we speak. As in the definition, pragmatic discusses how we choose our correct speech when talking to other people, because there are social rules when talking to others that we must understand. Another definition by Mey (1993: 42) states as follows: Pragmatics is the study of the conditions of human language uses as these are determined by the context of society. From the aforementioned limitations, it can be concluded that pragmatics is basically very determined by the context behind the language. Everyone must pay attention and be careful to his speech in accordance with what was discussed with the interlocutor. The context discussed includes two kinds of things, namely social contexts and societal contexts. Social context is a context that arises as a result of the emergence of interactions between community members in a particular social and cultural society. What is meant by Societal context is a context in which the determining factor is the rank position of community members in social institutions that exist in certain social and cultural communities. When we talk we have to pay attention to, who we are talking to and what context is being discussed in accordance with what is discussed in pragmatics. As stated by Tarigan (1985: 34), pragmatics is a general study of how context affects the way a person interprets a sentence. Based on the above opinion, it can be seen that what is meant pragmatically is an explanation of the ability to use someone's language that is appropriate and relates and harmonizes sentences and contexts. The important point that can be taken from the understanding of pragmatics from some experts is our speech act towards the context and with whom we make a conversation. Pragmatics focuses on how a speaker can express a meaning by knowing social rules and of course it must be in accordance with the context of the discussion. 2. Definition and my understanding about pragmatics After reading the definitions of pragmatics from several experts, in my opinion, pragmatics is a study that studies the language relations and the spoken and written words which are in accordance with the context and social rules. In addition, the language we speak, with whom we speak, in what situations, and in what context, we must follow the rules that we can learn in pragmatics. The language and speech we convey are based on the context of society which can judge how well we speak words that are in accordance with the conditions and our speech partners. Somehow we have to adapt in order to speak words well, by studying a lot of pragmatics. REFERENCE Clancy B, O'Keeffe A 2015.
