Advances in the study of signed languages within a cognitive perspective2020 •
In this paper we describe a cognitive grammar approach to the study of signed language grammar. Using data from different signed languages, we explore three broad topics. First, we examine pointing, Place, and placing. We analyze pointing as a construction consisting of a pointing device, a symbolic structure which directs the interlocutor’s conceptual attention, and a Place, a symbolic structure consisting of a spatial location and a meaning, the focus of attention. Placing is a construction in which non-body anchored signs are placed at a location in space, thereby creating or recruiting a Place structure which can be used in subsequent discourse. We examine how these structures work in nominal grounding and in extended discourse. Second, we examine a cognitive grammar approach to grammatical modality. Our analysis is based on the cognitive model called the control cycle, which posits two types of control: effective, which describes our striving to influence what happens in the wo...

Clausal Structure and a Tier for Grammatical Marking in American Sign Language1992 •
Grammatical information in ASL can systematically be marked on the face. Such nonmanual marking extends over the c-command domain of the trigger, and therefore provides information about the hierarchical organization of the language. Consistent with evidence available from the distribution of non-manual markings—as illustrated with respect to wh-marking and negation—a basic clausal structure for ASL is proposed. Furthermore, we suggest, contrary to generally accepted claims about ASL, that both Tense and Agreement are structurally present in all ASL main clauses. This analysis allows for a uniform account of the licensing of null subjects in ASL. Evidence in favor of this analysis, and against a dual licensing mechanism (as proposed in Kegl, 1985, and Lillo-Martin, 1986, 1991b), is presented.

Role shift is the widespread phenomenon in sign languages whereby a signer reports utterances, thoughts or actions of a character in another context by resorting to a possibly very rich array of nonmanual markers that imitatively depict the agent in that context. Such markers can include changes in eye gaze direction, facial expression, head and body position, and are mostly articulated simultaneously with manual signing. The stretches of signing marked with such nonmanual cues are interpreted by default with displaced reference to the derived context being reported. The literature that has undertaken a formal analysis of role shift has mostly focused on its use as a means to encode reported discourse, and it has addressed the question whether role shift is marking a direct quotation only or it encodes indirect reports as well. In this line of work, its use to report someone else’s actions has been often put aside, despite the fact that in spontaneous discourse both uses occur inter...
