The House That Zee Built by Prof. Surbhi Dahiya is a thoroughly researched and meticulously authored book on media management that traces the development of Zee Network, one of India's biggest and oldest private satellite TV networks, spanning over three decades. In the book, the author judiciously flips through a wide array of research techniques, including historical analysis, a longitudinal case study, and in-depth interviews with the organisation's owners, top management, and employees to encapsulate the journey of Zee Network, from rags to riches. The book also houses a detailed secondary data study of Zee media conglomerate's annual reports, value-mission-vision statements, financial sheets, and other proprietary literature to make this work exhaustive and well documented. The current reviewer assesses the book on three different levels: the chronological history of the development of a private media company from the time when LPG reforms were first implemented in India, the managerial and economic insights of the media business, and the important takeaways this book offers for media scholars.
