Dante’s presence among the Guelph feditori [troops of the first line] at the battle of Campaldino has generally been accepted by Dante scholarship. Yet, this is far from a straightforward issue, and thus deserves reconsideration. This article examines the extent to which the claim of a Dante feditore may find confirmation in recent historical research. In light of work by military historians on troop formations in field battles and that of social historians on the social status of the feditori, it is possible to establish with a degree of accuracy whether or not the poet was among the bravest fighters at Campaldino.
