Today, the image of the cave is regarded with suspicion. It seems to call for rule by experts and social engineers, for a tyranny of technocrats: a dubious, if not diabolical, prospect. The masses are interpreted as prisoners subject to the ‘manufactured consensus’ of a class of media high priests gathered around a promethean fire up above. Plato seems to have legitimated the idea that they rule by right of esoteric wisdom. Before too long, it looks almost plausible that high-profile figures in science, technology, and government are a dystopian Platonic illuminati. How can an image as powerful and true as Plato’s original acquire such a sinister aspect and serve no longer as an aspiration towards education but rather as an admonition against rule by experts?

The field of computer assisted language learning (CALL) is a polarising issue with many demands and expectations directed towards it. Its importance was raised during the 2020/2021 Covid pandemic. The resulting need for distance courses and the swift progression in university grammar presence courses raises the need for additional computer-based materials to enable self-directed learning. As existing exercise material often leans towards behaviouristicly founded drill exercises, new forms of CALL exercises need to be developed. The main objective of the study is to lay the foundations for a comprehensive learning platform for Bachelor students of Germanic philology in Finland. This study examines curricular goals, derives designing principles for a pedagogical grammar, which eclectically includes different streams of grammar such as traditional (school) grammar, dependency grammar, functional grammar, case grammar and some concepts of construction grammar. Furthermore, attention is ...
Abstract This research work stems from the need raised in the various regulations established in Ecuador, where the urgency of transforming the national education system through the development of research in higher education, making the use Based Learning evidenced research (ABI), in a good teaching strategy to achieve an end. It is intended to demonstrate the relationship between the increase in teaching scientific production and use of teaching methods Based Learning Research within the learning process in the classrooms of the State University of Milagro, UNEMI, in order to contribute to the creation of new knowledge. It is a qualitative and quantitative research transversal, which had 304 students as participants. ABI Questionnaire, created by the authors, and the data were analyzed through SPSS software was used. The results indicate the growth in the use of scientific papers by students (76.32%) and increased scientific production of teachers. It is concluded that there is a relationship between students using more scientific information to perform their autonomous work and teachers who share their research in the classroom.

In the current revival of fundamentalist right-wing politics globally, Poland occupies an important place given the struggles for abortion and reproductive justice that have been ongoing there since 2016. Together with Mexican, Argentinian, South Korean, and Italian women, Polish feminists contributed to creating the International Women's Strike, which later spread throughout the globe, uniting movements in seventy countries. This article discusses the symmetric heroisms imposed by the conservative governments on women, who have to give birth “no matter what,” as well as on men, who are told to “defend their fatherland.” Such acute, gendered demands for heroism also perpetuate the binary heteromatrix, further marginalizing LGBTQIA+ people and groups. Recent Polish struggles have contributed to the shift in feminist proabortion narratives from the liberal one, centered on choice, to others more preoccupied with reproductive justice. This article argues that the recent legal limitations on access to abortion in Poland and other countries are central to the current effort to reestablish the rule of the state of exception. It also analyzes the weak resistance of grassroots feminist movements organizing for reproductive justice. The refusal to participate in heroic politics requires not only work for better access to abortion but also an alternative kind of subject formation, here tentatively defined as “unheroic,” as well as politics of weak resistance.
APOS Trends in Orthodontics, 2023
At present, orthodontists are treating more adult patients with missing or hopeless first molars as these teeth have the highest incidence of decay in permanent dentition. This case report presented the closure of extraction spaces of four first molars in a patient with Class II malocclusion. High torque self-ligating brackets were used combined with anterior bite turbo and Class II elastics. According to the case report, the combination of anterior bite turbo and Class II elastics may have the possibility to correct bite deepening during space closure and allow further upper incisor retraction and Class II correction.

The return of the Spanish flu in the year of Covid-19 The health crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and the emergency responses decided by state authorities had important social, economic, political and cultural consequences, and also brought the forgotten history of the Spanish flu back to public attention. This contribution compares the two pandemics by drawing attention to the different institutional reactions to the diseases, the transformations of the language of politics, the different social behaviours that emerged in two events that took place one hundred years apart, and their repercussions on the historiographical level.

Microservices enable a fine-grained control over the cloud applications that they constitute and thus became widely-used in the industry. Each microservice implements its own functionality and communicates with other microservices through language-and platform-agnostic API. The resources usage of microservices varies depending on the implemented functionality and the workload. Continuously increasing load or a sudden load spike may yield a violation of a service level objective (SLO). To characterize the behavior of a microservice application which is appropriate for the user, we define a MicroService Capacity (MSC) as a maximal rate of requests that can be served without violating SLO. The paper addresses the challenge of identifying MSC individually for each microservice. Finding individual capacities of microservices ensures the flexibility of the capacity planning for an application. This challenge is addressed by sandboxing a microservice and building its performance model. This approach was implemented in a tool Terminus. The tool estimates the capacity of a microservice on different deployment configurations by conducting a limited set of load tests followed by fitting an appropriate regression model to the acquired performance data. The evaluation of the microservice performance models on microservices of four different applications shown relatively accurate predictions with mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) less than 10%. The results of the proposed performance modeling for individual microservices are deemed as a major input for the microservice application performance modeling.

This research explored the experiences of healing and transformation within Reiki practitioners. Reiki practitioners are attuned to a traditional and ancient handson healing technique which involves the practitioner channelling life-force energy through their hands to heal themselves or others. The methodology of intuitive inquiry was used, and the interview transcripts of eight participants were analysed using Thematic Content Analysis. Eight themes were formed and included: Opening the Door, Shifting Beliefs, Lifestyle Changes, Healing Crisis, Moving Past Doubts, Spiritual Connection and Self-Empowerment. The results were presented through a compound narrative of the participants’ experiences. The findings showed that Reiki practitioners experienced transformation on mental, emotional, physical and spiritual levels. Many of the participants experienced struggles that they learned to interpret as meaningful. They also shifted their beliefs and made lifestyle changes which led to gr...
