This article takes up Erich Auerbach‘s claim that, while biblical narrative, unlike ancient Greek heroic epic, refrains from directly addressing the emotions of its characters, it is “fraught with background” and gestures at them repeatedly. The reader, in other words, is meant to fill in the gaps. Robert Alter, Meir Sternberg and others have largely follwed that suggestion in their work on biblical narrative. I argue that this thread of narrative theory corresponds to a Western, dualistic theory of knowledge that proceeds with a dichotomy between the representation of the material world and its underlying spiritual realities. Instead I propose that the apparent treatment of biblical characters as flat has to do with a different notion of personhood present in ancient Israel, one in which the contents of the person are not located in their interior, with their body being exterior, but rather are produced as a series of effects through social relations, material commitments, events, and objects that extend beyond the self and exist between selves. I explore this theme through several focal points in the Joseph narratives – Joseph‘s dream, the brothers‘ "guilt,“ Joseph‘s weeping, and Judah‘s petition – with special attention to issues of emotion and translation as they pertain to Hebrew terms for “love” (ʾhb), “hate” (śnʾ ), “jealousy” (qn’), “memory” (zkr), “guilt” (‘sm̆ ), and “sight” (rʾh).

All victims have something to say: the differential impact of victims' narratives on intergroup forgiveness / Todas las víctimas tienen algo que decir: el impacto diferencial de las narrativas de víctimas en el perdón intergrupal2024 •
Victims' testimonies have emerged as an interesting tool for generating changes in societies that are seeking to emerge from a violent conflict. However, victims are not a homogeneous group and their stances regarding the perpetrators can different according to whether they accept or reject intergroup forgiveness processes, as was the case of J. Améry, a writer and essayist who survived the Holocaust. In this article, we inquire into the impact of victims' testimonies on attitudes towards intergroup forgiveness in Spain (N = 274). An experimental study with three conditions was designed using victims' testimonies that were favourable (Condition 1) and unfavourable (Condition 2) to intergroup forgiveness, along with a condition with statistical data on violence (Condition 0). The results show a differential impact on attitudes based on the victim's testimony, in addition to emotional activation that is not inherently related to attitudes in favour of forgiveness but instead to the victim's attitude towards that process.

Approaching Simone de Beauvoir's feminism and social commentary as a resource to understand our current crises, Beauvoir and Politics: A Toolkit brings together established and emerging scholars to apply her insights to gender studies, political philosophy, decolonisation, intellectual history, age theory, and critical phenomenology. This collection starts from key concepts in Beauvoir's oeuvre and relates them to contemporary debates, asking how her notion of ambiguity speaks to lived experiences that have been highly politicized in recent years. The volume offers an important critical appraisal of Beauvoir's legacy, demonstrating the contemporary relevance of her thought as it diagnoses the present and looks toward change for a better future.
The Brain and Consciousness in Terms of the Science of Consciousness
The Brain and Consciousness in Terms of the Science of Consciousness2021 •
The article demonstrates the ability of the science of consciousness to offer solutions to scientific problems that are unsolvable in other fields of knowledge. The problem chosen for this demonstration is the relationship between the brain (usually considered a part of the physical world) and consciousness (which is not something physical). This choice can be considered random given the variety of philosophical and scientific questions that can only be answered through the science of consciousness.

(with Gabriele D'Amato) Multiverse Fiction: A Narratological Approach To Infinite Worlds Narratives2024 •
In recent years, movies and tv shows have increasingly adopted the notion and the structure of the multiverse from superhero comics, resulting in a great popularity of the concept across a wider audience. The article aims to define the basic features of contemporary multiverse narratives, and to explore some of their textual applications. The first part will deal with the narratological theory of parallel worlds in fiction, following Marie Laure Ryan's and Karin Kukkonen's analyses, to outline five key features shared by each multiverse narrative. The second part will be devoted to three significant case studies, that show three different applications of the multiverse as a textual device: Everything Everywhere All at Once as an example of intertextual narrative; Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, that relies on a cultural dominant; and the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a transmedial storyworld expanded through the characteristics of the multiverse.
