ALWAYS EAGER to talk about early American material life, Winterthur Portfolio's executive editor, Catharine Dann Roeber, met up with Martin Brückner, director of the Winterthur Program in American Material Culture, to examine and discuss Winterthur's first edition of Catesby's work. Guided by Catharine's questions, Martin's responses touch upon issues of materiality and its effect on historical communication and modern interpretation by students of material culture. Your 2017 book, The Social Life of Maps in America, 1750-1860, looks at how maps "became emotionally significant and transformative agents that wielded social and political influence" in early America. Can you help us think about why it is important to consider informational, paper-based works such as Catesby's Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands as objects, rather than merely two-dimensional documentary sources? Great question, and thank you for the invitation to explore with you Catesby's amazing Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands. Comparing early American commercial maps to Catesby's folios seems counterintuitive, even a little unfair, at first glance. Eighteenth-century maps mostly started their careers unbound, in single-sheet formats, with their useful lifespans frequently cut short by material degradation, rapid growth of information as communication networks expanded, and, in our times, by an archival stance that until recently treated old maps as mere ephemera appealing only to the map-hungry collector. Compare this to Catesby's author-inscribed, leather-bound volumes residing in high-profile institutions, like Windsor Castle no less! They are desirable collectibles and still in print after nearly 300 years. The book's spectacular prints of American species look as enduring as some of the distinguished names included in the volumes' orig
