Guide to using Zotero for your references. PART A : Installing Zotero and collecting references 1. Download the following files and install them. You need to install Firefox and Microsoft Word for this to work. If you want to use other browsers, go to this page for instructions: http://www.zotero.org/support/3.0 http://download.zotero.org/extension/zotero-3.0.8.xpi http://www.zotero.org/support/word_processor_plugin_installation_for_zotero_2.1 http://download.zotero.org/integration/Zotero-WinWord-Plugin-3.1.8.xpi 2. Install the extension and word processor plugins. When you install the word processor plugin, make sure Word is closed. 3. In Firefox you should see something like this: 4. Start a new collection. This is a folder where you can save your references. Give it a name 5. Search for your references. Use your favorite search engine. I recommend Google Scholar or Microsoft Academic Search. In this example I search for Pattern Recognition. 6. Click on the icon next to the star icon on the address bar. You should see this screen 7. To save a webpage as a reference, click on the button next to the green plus icon. When the mouse pointer hovers over the icon you will see the tooltip ‘Create New Item From Current Page’. You should see this screen next. NOTE: Journal and conference articles are preferred over web page references. 8. You can also search using document identifiers such as ISBN, DOI or PMID. Click on the icon next to the save webpage icon. The tooltip for it is ‘Add Item By Identifier’. As an example, type the following DOI: 10.1145/1656274.1656278. PART B: Inserting references and generating a table of references. 1. Click on the Add Ins tab in Word 2007. 2. You first need to choose the style of your references. For FYP it’s APA. Click on the 2nd icon from the right. The tooltip is ‘Zotero Bibliographic Management: Zotero Set Doc Pref’. Choose American Psychological Association 6th Edition and Press OK. 3. To insert the reference you click on the left most icon. The tool tip is called ‘Zotero Bibliographic Management: Zotero Insert Citation’. Put the cursor where you want to insert it. You will see the following: Type in either the title of the reference or the author’s name. Choose the reference you want and press enter.
