In the foreseeable future of Indo-Pacific region, the most overwhelming maritime insecurity challenge will emanate from China’s geopolitical contestation with the West (possibly in collusion with Russia), leading to an intentional or inadvertent military escalation at sea. The ongoing Ukraine crisis portends this. Notwithstanding the fact that the ongoing European War is largely a ‘heart-land’ continental affair, it nonetheless provides relevant lessons for the maritime Indo-Pacific by exposing the fragility of the UN-led international order. Also, the precursors of the Ukraine crisis mirror the insecurities, motivations and alignments in the Indo-Pacific ‘rim-land’.
The Open University of Cyprus (OUC), with scientific coordinator Dr Xenia Charalambidou, is organizing an Erasmus+ Blended Intensive Programme (BIP) entitled: “Cyprus Experimental Field School (CEF): From Cultural Heritage to Materials Science – The Female Potters of Cyprus”. The BIP is being held in Cyprus (Nicosia, Kornos village and Agios Demetrios village) from July 8 to July 16, 2024. The objective of this BIP is twofold. First, it seeks to provide a fully immersive experience of dynamic pottery cultures from apprenticeship through to vessel use and also in material science analyses. Secondly, it aims to give students the requisite skills, in consultation with potting elders, to apply this knowledge to explore how multistage hand-built pots were made and used in the past. In this BIP, the archives of ethnoarchaeologist Dr Gloria London, who has documented the Cypriot female potters since 1986, serve as a nucleus from which one can thoroughly document the dynamic context of their practices.

It is common knowledge that Jehovah's Witnesses reject the veneration of icons, which they equate with idol worshipping, while the Kingdom Halls do not contain any religious image or representation (icon, statue, religious painting). This aniconic attitude, however, is not consistent. Jehovah's Witnesses' publications are abundantly illustrated with biblical characters or episodes, eschatological representations, as well as pictures intended to reveal the stark contrast between their own ideal world, and the corrupted world outside their organization. This imagery seems to have a utilitarian purpose, rather than an aesthetic one, aiming mainly to create strong (positive or negative) emotions able to serve the aims of the organization. The present study aims to investigate, by means of images, the manner in which Jehovah's Witnesses describe themselves and their doctrine, as well as their position in relation to mainstream society and its values. We shall examine illustrations from recent publications issued by the Jehovah's Witnesses, as well as the official Romanian-language website of the organization, in order to reveal the common themes embraced by its imagery, to identify its stereotypes and clichés, and to analyze the dynamics of the interplay of identity and alterity.

This is the speech I intended to deliver on the Right of Return at the Palestine Congress in Berlin on 12 April 2024, organized by pro Palestine and Jewish groups. The three-day conference was shut down by 2000 policemen. Noted speakers from Germany, UK, USA and Greece were not allowed to speak or enter the country. Germany relived its past under the banner of Israel.
