2003, Prince Klaus Fund Journal #10a: The Survival and Innovation of Crafts
How does a craft reinvent itself as 'traditional' following cultural, social and political upheaval? In the township of Dingshu, Jiangsu province of China, artisans produce zisha or Yixing teapots that have been highly valued for centuries. Yet in twentieth-century socialist imagination, handicrafts were an anomaly in a modern society. The Maoist government had clear ambitions to transform the country by industrialization, replacing craft with mechanized methods of production. Four decades later, some of the same artisans identified as 'backward' handicraft producers in the 1950s and made to join workers' cooperatives, were now encouraged to set up private workshops, teach their children and become entrepreneurs. By the 2000s ceramic production in Dingshu is booming and artisans are buying their first cars, often luxury brands. However, many involvements of the Chinese state are apparent, from the control of raw materials, to the inscription of the craft on China's national list of intangible cultural heritage. In this perceptive study, Gowlland argues that this re-evaluation of heritage is no less inherently political than the collectivism of the communist regime. Reflecting that the craft objects, although produced in very different contexts, have remained virtually the same over time and that it is the artisans' subjectivities that have been transformed, he explores the construction of mastery and its relationship to tradition and authenticity, bringing to the fore the social dimension of mastery that goes beyond the skill of simply making things, to changing the way these things are perceived, made and talked about by others. "Gowlland takes his reader on a captivating journey into a world of craftwork that has undergone seismic change since the era of Chairman Mao. A combination of rich ethnography, refined analysis and the author's hands-on understanding of the potter's materials and techniques convincingly demonstrates that craft knowledge and aesthetic appreciation are deeply embedded in the political. This is a highly significant book for all scholars of craft and material culture." Trevor Marchand, Emeritus Professor of Social Anthropology, School of Oriental and African Studies

The objective of this paper is to discuss contemporary craftsmanship in China, a subject that has long been ignored by free market and public concern. The holding of the Olympic Games in 2008 generated a renewed interest in Chinese national identity, several new approaches to re-discover Chinese craftsmanship subsequently emerged at the same time, opening up a complexity and thrives interests in re-engaging Chinese culture. This paper will draw parallels between the Arts and Crafts Movement and contemporary China. By re-examining this misread and underestimated movement, while unveiling its social impact and evolution throughout the past one hundred years, focus to discuss the philosophy and methodology of Arts and Crafts Movement to evaluate the investigation, manufacturing and craftsmen living situation of contemporary China. Moreover, I will present several case studies of Chinese contemporary craftsmanship, main bodies including KANJIAN Creation, a social enterprise transformed from NGO action; PINWU, a design practice focused on localised craftsmanship research and deisgin; and Stellar Works, a new ‘made in China’ benchmark collaborate with global design. Overall, I intend to discover the value of Chinese craftsmanship through the lens of preservation and innovation, in addition to its wider meanings and implications.

CRAFT: Craft and the Making of "Global" Contemporary Art2023 •
To approach the broader question of how craft often serves as a constituent element in contemporary art, this essay traces the historical developments that catalyzed the ideological differentiation of art, craft, modernism, and the contemporary in colonial and postcolonial contexts. I suggest that this historical mapping, dating back to projects of industrialization and empire in the nineteenth century, is important in terms of tracing the transcultural routes to contemporary art’s desire for globalism today, and the role of craft therein. This also provides necessary context for considering craft as the hinge of an artwork but also as risk for artists from regions like Southeast Asia, whose works become instrumental in the making of a “global” contemporary art.

Indian traditional crafts, involving practices rooted in local knowledge and accumulated over time have intimidated the fashion conscious connoisseurs with their charm of color and form. Amongst the most noted in the old days were the hand painted resist dye cloths known as Coromandel chintz which made history in the then known world. Chintz is defined as Indian cotton cloth on which a pattern has been produced by hand drawing with a bamboo 'pen' – kalam and dyed with mordants and resists. Chintz textiles were used in Europe, especially in Britain and the Netherlands, from the early 17th century to the early 19th century 1. This paper attempts to highlight the need for upkeep of the traditional craft skills, for; they contribute in carving newness in fashion with a cultural essence. Indian chintz, which was once considered for use as home furnishing, has transformed its image and was known to have revolutionized European fashion scenario during the 17 th and 18 th centuries. Measures to ensure technological advancements to deal with craft wellness and progress through interlinking design and craft seem to generate greater benefit for craft sustenance. With the innate presence of skills, guidance through sensitization of design trends can provide orientation towards current market needs enabling an emergence of cultural fashion.
Published alongside an exhibition of the same name at the British Museum (open July 19, 2007 to October 21, 2007), Crafting Beauty in Modern Japan highlights a selection of art crafts submitted to the annual Japan Traditional Art Crafts Exhibition over the past 50 years by members of the Japan Art Craft Association. Presented in large 9 X 11 inch format and replete with over 150 stunning color photographs, the catalogue follows the categories used to organize the Art Crafts Exhibition, with sections on ceramics, textiles, lacquer, metal, wood and bamboo, and “other crafts” (dolls, cut metal foil, and glass). Included in the introductory section are essays by Kenji Kaneko (National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo), the book’s editor Nicole Rousmaniere (Guest Curator and Director of the Sainsbury Institute), and Takeo Uchiyama (National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto).

UNESCO's report has extended the definition of craft from 'visual arts' to the 'design and creative services domain' since the 2000s. The scope of the definition is extending further with industrial or economic development of producing area. However, we can also focus on the figurative behaviour of craft that induce civil participation and small and grassroots activities in local communities in Japan. Such behaviour can be attributed to Nomin-bijutsu (hereinafter called 'the Peasant Crafts movement') that began in 1919. This article discusses the potential of craft from the following two perspectives. One is the situational presence of craft, in which 'public' can be equated with 'recreation, education, and labour', 'visual' with 'aesthetics, simplicity, and expression', and 'domestic' with 'lifestyle, interior, and housework'. The other is the historical presence of craft, described as 'the Peasant Crafts movement', 'Yanagi's classification', and the 'enculturation of administration'. The former illustrates the potential of craft in the community. The latter includes the former in its definition of craft. Therefore, we can define the figurative behaviour of craft in Japanese theory and the system of craft. For example, although Yanagi's classification, which was published by art critic Muneyoshi (Soetsu) Yanagi (1889-1961) in 1928, theoretically separates 'folk craft' into 'guildoriented (creative crafts)' and 'business-oriented (industrial craft)', this article clarifies that the Peasant Crafts product is a synonym of the concept of 'folk craft' in the context of unification of 'guild-oriented (creative crafts)' and 'business-oriented (industrial craft)' folk craft. It also indicates that the Peasant Crafts movement is opposed to the enculturation of administration in the context of change from village scale to city scale.
