Гимн сталинской номенклатуре в «Кавалере Золотой Звезды»: роман Семена Бабаевского и фильм Юлия Райзмана2024 •
Praising Stalin’s nomenklatura in The Bearer of the Golden Star: The novel by Semyon Babayevsky and the fi lm by Yuliy Raizman One of the most popular novels in late Stalinist USSR, The Bearer of the Golden Star (1947–1948) by Semyon Babayevsky, is seen now as a representative symbol of “grand” or “varnishing” style in literature – to the same measure as the eponymous fi lm (1950) by Yuliy Raizman did for the Soviet cinematic tradition. High offi cial status of both texts guaranteed by Stalin’s awards matched the overwhelming success they both enjoyed with general public. The author here makes an attempt to examine the possible reasons of this popularity and off ers a look at The Bearer of the Golden Star as at panorama both of a newborn after the World War II privileged social stratum, nomenklatura, and a system of social elevators leading to it – as much demanded by its target audience. The modes of fi ctional re-interpretation of real bureaucratic procedures are considered as well as the authors’ dealing with the key characters representing diff erent nomenklatural positions; and also some «ethnographic» characters used to blur the border between social strata, so that the Soviet “new ruling class” could still be seen as an integral part of “working people”. The paper also deals with operational mechanisms of manipulative political metaphors and with those means Semyon Babayevsky and Yuliy Raizman used to ensure the highest possible level of propaganda impact. Special attention is also paid to the fi gure of Stalin as the key element in the “Grand style” mythology that form a hidden suggestive structer of the text.

MOBILITIES AND COMMUNITIES BETWEEN NORTH AFRICA AND PORTUGAL: MUSLIMS AND JEWS IN THE MEDIEVAL AND EARLY MODERN AGESThis article refiects on me connections between geographical mobility and me constitution of a community In Portugal iii the cases aí Jews and Muslims in me Middle and Early Modern Ages. Data for me Middle Ages reveal greater mobility aí Muslims between the two shores ai the Mediterranean, whereas Jewish mobility seems to have been more prevalent within the Iberian kingdoms. This difíerence persisted in the Early Modern Age: many Muslims were captives, but as men and women alike were taken prisoner, they were able to constitute a community. ln the case of Jews, however, most of whom were men going to Portugal voluntarily and who left families behind in North Africa, this gender ditierence and the social ostracisation mat they, too, faced prevented a community from becoming established. This article is part aí the special theme section on Mobility and Displacement in and around thc Mecliterranean: A Historical Approach, guest-edlted by Cátia Antunes and Giedré Blalyté.
FEMALE PERSPECTIVE on the relationship between well-being and resilience in Corane housing (Architecture, urban insertion and socioeconomic factors) (Atena Editora)
FEMALE PERSPECTIVE on the relationship between well-being and resilience in Corane housing (Architecture, urban insertion and socioeconomic factors) (Atena Editora)2024 •
The study investigated women's perceptions of their experiences of well-being and resilience in homes in Corane, Mozambique, adopting a qualitative, basic and descriptive approach. Initially, semi-structured interviews were carried out with five women, in addition to a public workshop to hear the women's opinions and a two-day home immersion in a family headed by a woman. The results revealed several limitations faced by women in the Corane housing context. Issues related to durability, acoustics and comfort were identified as significant challenges with regard to the appropriate housing model. Furthermore, the urban insertion of housing showed deficiencies in public equipment, acoustic aspects, public safety, drainage and urban afforestation. The socioeconomic conditions of women were also addressed, highlighting restrictions related to income generation. An important contribution of the study was the presentation of fundamental solutions and strategies for gender-responsive housing models in Corane. By considering women's perspectives, these solutions can guide the redefinition of IDP resettlement programs in the future. However, despite the socioeconomic opportunities created, cultural issues still limit women's participation in income generation in Corane, often leaving them dependent. While divorced or single women actively seek to become self-sufficient, married women tend to depend more on exchanging products and donations.

Babylonian Market Predictions2019 •
https://doi.org/10.1163/9789004397767_004 During the Neo-and Late Babylonian periods (ca. 650 BCE-50 CE), Babylonian scholars systematically recorded market rates along with astronomical, meteorological and historical data in the Astronomical Diaries and related texts. Within that same period of time they also formulated astrological procedures for predicting market rates. These procedures are analysed and compared here with market predictions made in earlier celestial divination and with implicit evidence for market predictions within the Astronomical Diaries and related texts themselves. In this connection the question of why market rates were included in the Astronomical Diaries is also addressed.
