This edition focuses on the histories of design, techniques, and technology. The scholarly work that links them has generated a growing number of research and publications, revealing the diversity and richness offered by this interdisciplinary intersection. This issue gathers an entanglement on the historical, cultural, and technical conditions of objects, images, and infrastructures, integrating diverse perspectives from design, as well as from the history of technology, engineering, STS (science and technology studies), material culture studies, and gender studies. In many cases, these perspectives are overlapped and combined loosely and unorthodoxly by analyzes of and through design. Download: 10.7764/disena.18

Storia e Ricerche celebrates its tenth issue by again featuring-following a series of monograph issues-research studies covering a range of themes. Yet in this case, there is a common thread tying the heterogeneous topics together: methodological considerations on the study and use of primary sources. Journal of Design History

Design historians generally avoid extended self-reflection or discussion of how they conduct research. Typically, they use historical research methods, yet design historians have also used methods borrowed from art history, cultural and literary studies, anthropology, sociology or other social sciences. This Virtual Special Issue, comprising articles drawn from past issues of the Journal of Design History, addresses the state of design history’s methodology. While few authors in the Journal have focused specifically on the topic of methodology, their implicit adoption of an eclectic variety of research methods over the past thirty years is revealing. This Introduction seeks to contextualize a collection of twelve articles within a brief overview of methodologies in history, art history and design history. The articles are then linked to scholarship beyond the Journal of Design History, and the final section presents additional methodological possibilities for design historians.

The paper proposes a more inclusive and broad based approach towards Design History and how it can make Design history more relevant in the wake of the glocalised role of Design
