Hang Tuah in the Sea of Oral Malay Narratives2012 •
Hang Tuah is a culture hero who defines both himself and the Malays, along with their feudal and universal values. Three forms of existences have been bestowed on him by the peoples of the Malay Archipelago, i. e. the historical, the fictional and the oral. This paper attempts to trace the oral presence of Hang Tuah which is more varied, colourful, and in effect, more developed than the other two. At present, in Sungai Duyung, Singkep, Riau, Malacca and many places in the Archipelago, there is a wealth of stories about him, his origins, exploits, comrades and death. Many stories of the Sea Sekanaq of West Singkep, Riau claim that he originated from amongst their people. In Bintan, however, where his family found a home, some other famous stories are told of how he met his four friends, and his early relationship with the Bendahara and the Raja of Bintan. Hang Tuah and his family moved to Malacca when the new state became an important and wealthy port. Here, the stories refer to the ...

This paper discusses the value of the happiness enjoyed by a Malay hero, Hang Tuah, the famous 15 th century warrior of the Melaka Empire. As a Malay hero, Hang Tuah was admired for his wisdom, prowess and strength. He was the epitome of the ideal Malay to his people, especially in his undivided devotion to the King of Melaka. His heroism and greatness as the Admiral of Melaka was evident when he was able to promote the reputation of Melaka, making it famous throughout the world. However, towards the end of his life, he was willing to forgo his fame as the Admiral of Melaka and abandon the king, to whom he owed his loyalty, in pursuit of his dream of genuine happiness in knowing and loving his Creator. Hang Tuah’s action had a very great impact on the king of Melaka, until he also stepped down from the throne to follow after the action of Hang Tuah. It can be said that the absence of Hang Tuah to lead the attack against the Portuguese invasion in 1511 was the cause of the immense de...

The Similarities and Differences of Hang Tuah and Cindua Mato Characters2020 •
The Malay and Minangkabau people are those who like to speech and act on literature. This can be seen through the existence of several genres of literary works from those ethnic, ranging from the form of saga, tale, and legend. Among them are Hang Tuah and Cindua Mato saga. Hang Tuah saga grew and developed in Malay society, while Cindua Mato saga grew and developed in Minangkabau society. Both sagasare interesting to be studied as an analytical study. First, Hang Tuah and Cindua Mato saga is a great literary work owned by both ethnic groups. As a masterpiece, they both have an appeal to be analyzed in many ways. Secondly, Hang Tuah and Cindua Mato figures by both ethnic communities have become a big myth. Hang Tuah became myth by the Malay community as a brave and loyal figure to the king. So did with the figure of Cindua Mato who became myth by Minangkabau society as a brave and loyal figure to the king. As with other literary works, Hang Tuah and Cindua Mato saga contains the aes...
Ethnicity and culture blossoms in Malaysia. It is the microcosm of Asia at its core. The nation is a cultural frontier, home to various groups populating its numerous streets, cities, states and islands, all influencing the development of its societies. Not only is Malaysia, dotted with historical landmarks, towering skyscrapers, multicultural festivities and food, but it is also ornately loaded with centuries-old oral stories and tales. These fables, epics and myths are staple for the construction of Malaysia as a nation. When effectively communicated, such stories can be transformed into a standardised history, consequently becoming part and parcel of the discourse of identity. This is because history and myth are inextricably linked to the process of nation-building. Friedman argues that history is a " mythical construction " (196). The country needs these fabled-tales to invigorate dry prose and give grandeur to fictional characters to glue the nation together and give them " a common compass, a heading, a beacon to follow and admire " (Farish 224). Hence, rooted in Malaysia's " symbolic and discursive repertoire " (The Other Malaysia), these tales project national consciousness in order to achieve communal harmony. Although, these tales have become a symbol of nationalistic pride, on the flip side of the coin, more often than not these stories have been misappropriated and misread by politicians who refute and overlook Malaysia's multicultural and multi-ethnic societal makeup. On the whole, these tales are moulded " according to the desires and status quo of those who produce historical texts in the present. " (Rahimah 136). Hence, history is a clear-cut representation of a " past that is already organised by the present " (Friedman 197). This single-privileged representation of our dynastic national heroes and myths into " parochial tales " (The Other Malaysia) is due to fear over the loss of power and control. Therefore, these right-wing politicians are constantly seeking new ways of tampering and manipulating these manuscripts to secure the comfort zone of one dominant community while marginalising and ostracising others. The Hikayat Hang Tuah is one such victim of nefarious and ambiguous political agenda in Malaysia. Written and rewritten by an array of authors from different time periods in history, Hikayat Hang
The legend of Hang Tuah plays a prominent role in the official Malay-centric history of Malaysia. Hang Tuah, a warrior of the 15th-century Malaccan royal court, represents the perfect Malay subject and, to this day, continues to be an icon for Malay nationalism. In the cybersphere, there are heated discussions of an alleged government conspiracy to conceal the ‘true’ identity of this Malay folk hero. According to a myth circulating in the cybersphere, DNA analysis of ancient graves revealed that Hang Tuah was actually Chinese. This article examines the significance of this cybermyth, situating the phenomenon within the current context and political discourse. I explore how the myth of the Chinese Hang Tuah has created an entry point and space for discussions on issues such as rights, belonging and entitlement that are otherwise not available in the public sphere. I suggest in circulating and debating this myth, the public is reinterpreting a multicultural Hang Tuah and participating in an act of history making.

Representation of The Character Value Of Wisdom, Justice, and Low Self-Esteem in The Tale Entitled Hang Tuah2019 •
2013 •
Hang Tuah is a character in the epic Hikayat Hang Tuah which has become the pride of Malay Literature. The epic, and especially the protagonist of the epic, Hang Tuah, have been much discussed. This is also the case where children’s literature is concerned, as the Hikayat Hang Tuah has attracted the attention of Malaysian authors to produce adaptations of stories from this epic. The stories linked to the character of Hang Tuah contain many elements of fantasy which makes them suitable for adaptation as children’s literature. Establishing what types of adaptations have been made of these stories forms the core of this study. Also, the acceptance of Hang Tuah as a hero of the Malays has been challenged by movements, especially in social realism. As a result, the character of Hang Jebat has become accepted as a heroic figure instead. However, whether or not social realism has influenced adaptations done for children, and whether there has been a shift in the figure of hero as a result ...
