2024, The News
In the age of social media, organised youth are a power to reckon with. The recent events in Bangladesh have highlighted this fact, overlooked by authoritarian leaders, including some in the Global South. Millions of protesters had defied curfew restrictions for several days and taken to the streets. In the end, their persistence despite deaths by violence ended Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s uninterrupted 15-year rule. A military-backed interim government has since been installed with the tacit approval of the student/ youth leaders who have called for representative democracy. Given the widespread youth resentment and a volatile sociopolitical context, there is apparently no room for the military to directly intervene in politics. It seems probable that the country will head for another general election.

Current History
If the ruling party continues to marginalize the opposition, deny it the space for peaceful protest, and disregard the need for a political roadmap for moving forward, it will encourage extremists to take over.
The News, 2023
Given Hasina’s overwhelming control of the governmental machinery in tandem with the non-elective state institutions, her party, the Awami League, is all set to perform the ritual of electoral politics early next year and grab five more years to rule over Bangladeshi politics, economy, society and the state in an autocratic manner grounded in a weird form of one-party rule in a parliamentary democracy. The opposition’s last hope lies in protest politics in alliance with pro-democracy and rights voices from the media, academia, the civil society and the Bangladeshi diaspora. If the opposition reflects a weak agency as it did in the past, the Hasina-led autocracy will be perpetuated at the cost of democracy, media freedom, human rights and, above all, a progressive future.
