Acute cholecystitis and laparoscopic cholecystectomyTo determine whether laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) should be the procedure of choice in treating acute cholecystitis. A prospective study was conducted over a 4 1/2-year period. There were 187 patients with acute cholecystitis out of 1020 patients with gallbladder disease who required cholecystectomy. These patients were divided into three groups based on the time interval between the onset of pain and the time patients sought medical attention: Group 1, < 3 days; Group 2, 3 to 7 days; Group 3, > 7 days. All the patients underwent LC after a comprehensive preoperative workup. The parameters analyzed included operating time, hospital stay, and conversion rate. The comparison was made among the various groups and with those who had elective LC. One hundred twenty patients (64.17%) presented for treatment within 3 to 7 days of the onset of an attack. Empyema of the gallbladder was seen in 106 (56.68%) patients and phlegmon of the gallbladder in 42 (22.46%) patients. Group 3 p...

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy in the presence of lumboperitoneal shunt2013 •
Laparoscopic cholecystectomy remains the mainstay of treatment in patients with gallstone disease. Nowadays more than ever before, patients present with more comorbidities and entities that make the laparoscopic approach composite. One of these is the presence of lumboperitoneal (LP) shunts. Herein, we describe a case of successful laparoscopic cholecystectomy in a patient with an LP shunt and an occipital nerve stimulator in the anterior abdominal wall. We describe alterations in technique, aiming at surgeons that perform laparoscopic cholecystectomies with useful tips in order to successfully deliver the operation. A brief review of the literature in the current subject is also given.

In this paper, the hospital course and the follow-up of a patient presenting with acute calcular cholecystitis and ventriculoperitoneal shunt managed with laparoscopic cholecystectomy are presented followed by literature review on the management of acute calcular cholecystitis in patients who have ventriculoperitoneal shunts.

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy for treating acute cholecystitis -- possibilities and limitationsOur study analysed a batch of 1402 A.C., operated on within the S.U.U.B. First Surgical Clinic between 1993-2010. L.C. was possible in 90% of the cases, and conversion to open surgery was required in 10% of the cases. The causes that determined the necessity for this conversion were pericholecystic plastron - 49%, unclear anatomical orientation - 46.5%, haemorrhage - 9.7%, iatrogenic injury of the main bile duct - 0.23% etc. Statistical analysis has shown that male gender, over 50 yrs. age groups, gangrenous A. C. and fibrous plastron represent risk factors for the conclusion of L.C. Reinterventions were performed on 20 patients (1.4%). Postoperative mortality was not encountered.

Criminology has tended to focus more on crime than on the victims of crime. It has generally separated the issues of crime from its victims, which has led to limitations in the treatment of victims. Victimology focuses on individuals or social organizations that have been directly affected by criminals by paying attention to those whose rights were violated and the negative consequences of crimes, such as bodily injury, emotional trauma, property damage. However, what is being left out is the issue of the children of incarcerated parents who suffer collateral punishment. This article explores research findings and academic works in this area which are few in number as this is still a newly-emerging field of criminal justice. The picture being clearly shown here is how the imprisonment of a child’s father or mother causes internal impacts, such as emotional suffering, grief, tension and anxiety as well as external impacts expressed through anti-social behavior, aggressiveness or isol...
