Dynamism and abandonment of the suburban activity of a monastic bourg: Lagrasse (Aude-France) during the early Middle Ages Lagrasse is a monastic bourg in Corbières, inhabited by 650 residents and located close to a Benedictine abbey founded in 779. The bourg is on the right bank of the river Orbieu, the abbey on the opposite bank. This geographical proximity inevitably resulted in tensions when it came to sharing the peripheral area that was common to both communities, corresponding to a small valley of 100 hectares crossed by the Orbieu. The particularity of the suburban area of the monastic bourgs was that it blended into the sub-cloistral area of the abbeys concerned. In the case of Lagrasse, the suburban area was subordinated to the sub-cloistral area: the abbots were generally in charge of its planning and development, while the inhabitants were answerable to the demands of the abbey in the management of the resources and infrastructures of the small valley. They were able to adapt to this and cohabitation occurred without any major difficulty. In 1369, the inhabitants took over the maintenance of the monastery’s canal against the approval to draw its water to irrigate their extra muros gardens; the fulling mills activated by this same canal near the monastic enclosure had contributed to the prosperity of the bourg’s drapery industry. The inhabitants could equally refuse them, which would then lead to open conflict: the restrictions imposed by the abbey on fishing in the portion of the Orbieu located in the suburban area sparked two popular uprisings, in 1376 and in 1476. When the community of the inhabitants wanted to intervene in the suburban area, it was above all to move key infrastructures to within the bourg: the market after 1315, the parish church in 1359.With an approval proving impossible, the consuls then had to negotiate with the abbot, who did his utmost to control all the stages of the transfer. During the Middle Ages, the suburban area of Lagrasse fulfilled several functions: an economic one in terms of its mills and the market, that of providing food through the vegetable gardens of the inhabitants and the fishing in the Orbieu, and finally a social and religious function, given its parish church. The decline of the drapery industry and the intra muros transfer of the large-scale collective installations resulted in the abandonment of the suburban area and the end of its multiple functions. This certainly allowed the inhabitants to emancipate themselves partially from the authority of their powerful lord, who wielded a very strong influence on the small valley, but it also diminished the potential of the bourg. Indeed, from a small prosperous medieval city engaging in activities that required extra muros expansion, Lagrasse had, by the end of the Ancien Régime, become a rural bourg that was withdrawn inside its walls opposite its lord and no longer harboured the same ambitions.

This article analyzes how different early medieval monastic rules (the Rules of Caesarius, Aurelian, Benedict, Columbanus and the Regula cuiusdam ad virgines) deal with the challenge of organizing collective sanctity and producing effective intercessory prayer despite the Augustinan postulate that every human is inevitably sinful and fully dependent on divine grace. Every rule develops different concepts of monastic discipline as tool for approaching perfection. Some rules (especially those of Caesarius and Aurelian) put a strong emphasis on enclosure and separation of the monastic space from the sinful and polluting outside world; other rules (those of Benedict and Columban) use obedience, humility and the permanent confession of sins as main instruments for attaining salvation. The seventh-century Regula cuiusdam ad virgines provides the most elaborate disciplinary system, which combines the concept of enclosure with that of submission and permanent confession.
