As notifications become part of people's lives, their importance often depends on various factors that can influence the reaction and the disruption of recipients. The generation and the distribution of notifications should be carefully designed every time a new application or smart device is devised. This paper presents XDN (Cross Device Notification), a framework to assist developers in creating cross-device notifications by scripting. XDN provides a set of high-level APIs, based on JavaScript, for designing personalized notifications to be distributed among ad-hoc sets of end-user devices. Developers are also supported in implementing and testing notification strategies thanks to an integrated environment. We present a use case to demonstrate the functionality and the applicability of the framework.

A preliminary study of an intelligent system facilitating selective notification attendance on smartphones via alert assistance2020 •
A large body of interruptibility research has attempted to minimize disruptions caused by smartphone notifications. Yet, little research has explored ways to enable users to selectively attend to notifications, which can occur as early as users first notice the notification alert and start to speculate about its source. Nevertheless, users' speculation may not be always accurate. We took the first step in helping users make speculations about notifications to facilitate selective attendance. We developed Notiware, an Android app that helps users speculate about notifications by generating alert assistance when it detects that the app of an arriving notification cannot be correctly speculated. An ESM study with 30 users who used Notiware for 4 weeks shows that, overall, Notiware increased the accuracy of participants' speculation of notification app by 28%. Moreover, Notiware helped the participants skipped irrelevant notifications 1.21 times more often than without the assis...
With the growing number of mobile devices receiving daily notifications, it is necessary to manage the variety of information produced. New smart devices are developed every day with the ability to generate, send, and display messages about their status, data, and information about other devices. Consequently, the number of notifications received by a user is increasing and their tolerance may decrease in a short time. With this, it is necessary to develop a management system and notification controls. In this context, this work proposes a notification and alert management system called PRISER. Its focus is on user profiles and environments, applying data privacy criteria.

AlertMe: A Semantics-Based Context-Aware Notification System2009 •
In this work we present “AlertMe”, a semantics-based, context-aware notification system that provides personalized alerts to graduate students based on their preferences. An extensive description of the system is carried out. We present the underlying ontology that models the available knowledge, as well as how higher level knowledge inference and context-based decision making is achieved through rule-based reasoning. Finally, we outline the technical aspects of the developed system, covering issues involving the integration of the various subcomponents.
