In the works of Commodianus, in light of the apocalyptic vision that characterizes his theology, it is possible to detect the use of "signs" that are inserted both in the representation of the last times (in which the poet is convinced of living), both in the vivid description of the imminent eschatological battle. These "signs", sometimes, are characterized by the ambiguous value of which they are carriers. This is the case, for example, of music, which in the thought of Commodianus is perceived both as a "sign of salvation" (the music that accompanies the singing of the Psalms), and as a "sign of condemnation" (the music of banquets to which one abandons the "turba choraulica"). Other "signs" appear markedly connoted instead. Thus, the poet - while constantly drawing from the Scriptures - shows that he prefers a dynamic in which, during the history of salvation, is central the communication of the Law in oral form, entrusted to the voice (and song) of the prophets. But it is also the "silence of God", to which the silence of the faithful has to conform in the liturgical assembly, to be perceived as a "sign of salvation". Finally, the interruption of the silence of God corresponds to the start of the apocalyptic clash, triggered by the persecution of the faithful. Martyrdom is shown to be the saving moment par excellence: while the roar of the cosmic catastrophe explodes, the "populus absconsus" - martyrs people marked by the baptismal seal - advances towards Judea and bursts into songs of victory, until the final defeat of the second Antichrist and at the inauguration of the millennial Kingdom of God

Following the findings of contemporary theological and religious studies research, the present interdisciplinary study attempts to trace the process of adopting the originally Roman category of “religion” for referring to Christianity. The text notes, in particular, the socio-political role of religion in classical culture and the transformations that the relationship of the society of classical antiquity and the Christian community went through in the first centuries AD, especially the first Christian attempts at communication with the late classical Latin culture and the administrative structures of the Roman Empire. The adaptation of the category is traced back to Tertullian, whose conception appears to have fundamentally influenced later generations of Christians; the second part of the study therefore devotes considerable attention to his works. It is here that justified use of the category of “religion” in connection with the Christian tradition is first encountered, as an expression encompassing the doctrinal and philosophical, as well as ethical and liturgical aspects of Christianity. Analysis of the text of Tertullian’s Apologeticum shows how the apologetic literature of the second century AD conveys the Christian message in an exemplary and highly elaborate form, which serves the dual purpose of providing an adequate definition of the Christian religious identity and preserving it, as well as making it available to recipients of diverse contemporary cultural environments.

Neither of the two existing critical editions of the Apologeticum de tribus capitulis succeeds in identifying a literal citation which its author, Julian of Toledo attributes to Athanasius of Alexandria and which is not found in either of the works, authentic or attributed, of the patriarch of Alexandria. After an analysis of the sources which Julian may have utilized in his polemic with the Roman see, we find the citation in the Contra Arianos, Sabellianos et Photinianos dialogus of Virgil of Tapso in a fictitious conversation that this African author of the fifth century establishes between Arius and Athanasius.
