Stone and Splendor: Interior Decorations in Late-antique Palaces and Villas, Proceedings of a Workshop, Trier, 25–26 April 2019
Pavements and revetments in the audience hall (Basilika) and its vestibule of the late-antique imperial palace in Trier (Germany)2021 •
At the end of the 3rd century, the Roman emperor Maximian chose Trier as his imperial residence and initiated construction of the new residential palace. The equipment of the building was probably completed only in the 2nd half of the 4th century under emperor Valentinian I and his son Gratian. The so-called Konstantinbasilika, 27 × 67 m large hall with an apse, was the heart of the palace and served as the audience hall for the Roman em- peror. Numerous relicts of wall and floor incrustations were discovered in the building and its surroundings during various excavations in the 19th and 20th century. They bear witness to the splendid decoration of the hall with elaborate geometric and figural patterns performed in stone. The aim of this study was twofold: first, to identify the origin of the stones that were used for the interior décor of the audience hall and its vestibule. Second, to gain new insights into the former appearance of the hall. To pinpoint the provenance of the stones in addition to macroscopic examination petrographic, chem- ical and isotopic analysis (δ18O and δ13C) were applied. The investigation revealed that approximately 50 types of marmora, originating both from Mediterranean and regional sources were used for the décor of this building, though, regional rocks being little more abun- dant. The provenance of seven rock types have not yet been identified. The most frequent regional stones are the local granito verde a erbetta from the valley of the river Ruwer (Germany), Carboniferous grey/black limestone (Belgium), Devonian gris des Ardennes (Belgium) and the coarse-grained marble from the Odenwald (Germany). The precise study of the incrustation plates, the wall structure elements and filigree opus sectile remains, further of the original floor remains found in situ in the 19th century brought numerous new results about the floor patterns of the hall and the vestibule as well as new insights into some details of the former wall décor.

The basic aim of this study1 is to consolidate the available information on the mosaics which were found on one of the imperial palace sites of Sirmium (Site 1a) throughout all the archeological campaigns, with special focus on classification and analysis of the most recently found floor mosaics from the archaeological excavations conducted in 2006 and 2007. Until now, about 350m2 of preserved mosaic pavements have been found, which can be dated from the end of 3rd to the middle and the second half of 4th century. The strict classicistic style of the Late Roman period with polychrome geometric patterns prevails on them. Their composition consists of square nets, octagons, hexagons, rhombi and flowing meanders. Only one mosaic pavement has a unique figural representation of the god Mercury in one of 12 hexagonal fields.
