Duygu Sili PhD Candidate About Me I studied my Ph.D. in economics at Koç University. My interested area is on microeconomics, market design, mechanism design, school choice, matching theory and its applications. I am the Viterbi Postdoctoral Fellow in the Mathematics and Computer Science of Market and Mechanism Design program. She earned a B.S. in Mathematics and an M.A. in economics from Bilkent University before earning a Ph.D. in economics in Koç University, where she then worked as a postdoctoral scholar and an instructor last year. Her research interests center around the theoretical and practical aspects of market design, particularly highlighting its application within matching markets. Her research has focused on three main areas: dynamic kidney exchange models, realization of school choice mechanisms in real-world settings, and the evaluation of matching models along with the development of centralized pricing mechanisms for matching customers with service providers for freight transportation (funded by the European Research Council via the Good Mobility Lab at Koç University. The Viterbi postdoctoral fellowship is funded by a generous endowment from Dr. Andrew Viterbi, well known as the co-inventor of Code Division Multiple Access based digital cellular technology and the Viterbi decoding algorithm, used in many digital communication systems.

January 2023We design a centralized two sided iterative pricing algorithm to match customers with service providers. It can be used in freight transportation. D.Sili,Ö.Yılmaz, How to Incentivize Hospitals in Dynamic Kidney Exchange. in preparation, 2024 Jobmarket Paper We study a multi-hospital dynamic kidney exchange setting: there are two hospitals at which incompatible patient-donor pairs arrive under Poisson process. First, we consider full centralization where hospitals’ pairs are pooled and matched through a centralized mechanism. We show that, unlike the static exchange model (where centralization always yields an increase in the exchange surplus), under this dynamic setting, pooling might have the adverse effect of decreasing the total exchange surplus compared to decentralization, where hospitals match their own pairs separately. Second, we propose a hybrid design where hospitals utilize inter-hospital exchanges only when certain conditions are met. We then show that this hybrid design (with partial centralization) is incentive compatible for hospitals and improves the exchange surplus upon full centralization benchmark. D.Sili, An Empirical Study of Common Enrollment in School Choice: A School Assignment Problem. in preparation,2024 Empirical study of a school choice problem solved by providing a school with significant incentives to persuade it from evading the general student optimal mechanism and this make better off students. Simulations helps there to observe the real life applications of the theory D.Sili, An Empirical Study of Interdistrict School Choice: A School Assignment Problem. in preparation,2024 An application of a theory of student assignment problem, inter-district school choice where a student can be allotted to a school outside of her district is analyzed. The model is a matching with contracts between students and districts where a contract determines the specific school within the district that the student applies. Four policy goals are taken into account: individual rationality, improving student welfare, balanced exchange policy and student diversity in each district. The balanced exchange policy is that the number of students that each district admits from the other district must be equal to the number of students that it transfer to the others. We simulate the real life scenarios by embedding different positive coefficients into the utility functions of each student defined for each school and vice versa.
