Les mouvements sociaux et politiques qui ont institutionnalisé les réseaux alimentaires caritatifs sont divers et hétérogènes, illustrant les intérêts concurrents d’un système alimentaire américain depuis longtemps aux prises avec des tensions paradoxales entre le gaspillage alimentaire et la faim. Cet article analyse l’économie morale de la lutte contre la faim au sein d’un mouvement social diversifié qui négocie un ensemble de codes juridiques et de normes sociales établis au cours des quarante dernières années. Il fait l’hypothèse que les réseaux caritatifs sont un point d’observation privilégié de la compétition politique autour de l’avenir du système alimentaire américain.

Divestment in coal and manufacturing has resulted in widespread unemployment, state, county and municipal revenue losses, and cascading effects on social services, households, livelihoods and community life. For 10 years, FJL has conducted ethnographic research, coordinated cooperative experiments, and built pedagogical tools to democratize knowledge about West Virginia’s food system amidst this crisis. Working in a so-called red state, we have fostered conversations about food justice with rural, often socially conservative communities, and have worked to raise up human resources for meaningful community-led food justice organizing in Central Appalachia. In this paper, we consider the long accompaniment process with community partners and the effects of this experience on the evolution of research questions and actions.
In 2015, West Virginia’s flagship food bank confronted a financial crisis that threatened to cut ... more In 2015, West Virginia’s flagship food bank confronted a financial crisis that threatened to cut off the supply of emergency food to some 600 agencies serving 300,000 people a month. Focusing on this crisis, we explore the evolution of charitable food networks across the United States with a particular focus on the role of food banking within agro-industrial supply chains. Drawing on a three year institutional ethnography of West Virginia’s food banking economy, we analyze the transition from producer to buyer driven supply chains in a network that is dependent on charitable giving and affective labor to process surplus foods and revalue obsolete corporate inventories. We argue that food banks and their affiliate agencies have become key institutions within a vast food destruction network increasingly serving the needs of large food firms.
