Mitra Sharafi
I am a legal historian of colonial India at the University of Wisconsin, where I teach for the Law School, the History department and the Legal Studies program. My book, Law and Identity in Colonial South Asia: Parsi Legal Culture, 1772-1947, was published by Cambridge University Press in 2014 and won the Law and Society Association's 2015 J. Willard Hurst Prize for socio-legal history. My current book project looks at the intersection between the history of law, science and medicine, examining the new field of medical jurisprudence for India that emerged around the mid-19th century. Specifically, I am focusing on the work and biases of toxicological and serological experts in the courts of British India. I am also working on several articles, including an article on Parsi legal culture, the rule of law and Indian constitutionalism; another on abortion in colonial India (a spin-off from my larger project on medical jurisprudence), and a third on non-European law students from across the British Empire at the Inns of Court in the 19th-20th centuries.
