The main objective of the study was to find out how Social Studies teachers at the Senior High Sc... more The main objective of the study was to find out how Social Studies teachers at the Senior High Schools (SHSs) impact their content knowledge into students in the classroom. To achieve this objective, interview guide and questionnaire were used to elicit the views of respondents. In all, 54 Social Studies teachers were involved in the study. The simple random, cluster and convenient sampling techniques were used to select the respondents for the study. Frequency counts and percentages were used as statistical tools for analyzing the questionnaire data collected, and the data from the interview guide was transcribed, categorized, analyzed and discussed on themes and subthemes that emerged. The findings revealed that majority of the teachers used content knowledge of Social Studies they have acquired to impact in their teaching to develop attitude, skills, values and knowledge in students. Based upon the findings, it was recommended that, there should be courses on Social Studies content so as to develop teachers’ knowledge about the subject to enhance effective teaching.

This paper explored the perceived scope and approaches of curriculum supervision in selected seni... more This paper explored the perceived scope and approaches of curriculum supervision in selected senior high schools in the Central Region of Ghana. Descriptive survey was adopted for the study. Non-probability sampling method (purposive and convenience sampling techniques) was used to selects the respondents for the study. Questionnaire was used to elicit responses from both curriculum leaders and teachers. Primarily, descriptive statistics were used to analyze the data collected. Frequency and percentages in tables were adopted to present various perceptions held by curriculum leaders and teachers on the scope and approaches of curriculum supervision. It was concluded that curriculum supervision should follow stipulated rules and that selective curriculum supervision process should be applied in relation to individual teacher’s needs/challenges. It was recommended that ensuring compliance with the rules should be considered as a major purpose of curriculum supervision. Also, the scope of curriculum supervision should not only be limited to the classroom but to the activities outside the classroom which have influence on the teaching and learning interaction.

Influences of teachers’ authentic assessment on their classroom practices will be paramount to bo... more Influences of teachers’ authentic assessment on their classroom practices will be paramount to both teachers’ students if implemented effectively in the Social Studies classroom. The study used a descriptive case study design. Both the schools and teachers’ were simple randomly selected from fifty seven (57) government assisted Senior High Schools (SHSs) in the Central Region of Ghana. The study used ten (10) senior high schools and twenty (20) teachers’. Semi structured interview was the main instruments used for data collection. The research found out that for improvements to be made on teacher knowledge and ability and the policies and practices of authentic assessment in schools, teachers, students, parents and policymakers value and see the potential for authentic assessment to improve teaching and learning, it will continue to be under-emphasized, undervalued and poorly used.. It recommended that the teaching universities in Ghana should broaden their scope on the teaching of assessment to incorporate authentic assessment.

Researching on Colleges of Education (CoE) final year teacher-trainees’ (mentees) Social Studies ... more Researching on Colleges of Education (CoE) final year teacher-trainees’ (mentees) Social Studies curriculum conceptions and their classroom practices in the Junior High Schools (JHS) in Ghana has become indispensable since the subject introduced solely to right the wrong in society is taught mostly by diploma teachers from the country’s thirty-eight public Colleges of Education. Qualitatively, interpretative research technique was carefully chosen for this study. Non-probability sampling method was used. Classroom observation and interview outcomes of teacher-trainees were triangulated for consistency. Ratings of the observation were put into weighted average. The study revealed that School Based Assessment (SBA) was essentially not focused on attitudes and values; that is, affective skills development. Assessments were of mainly lower level of understanding like knowledge and comprehension. For the teaching of social studies to makeover, it is recommended that Social Studies tutors of CoE should hold it a duty to help students have better, more realistic ideas about the multiple realities of what constitutes Social Studies in the real world since they (teachers) influence what is taught.

Social Studies is an integrated discipline which is full of concepts, requiring a resourceful tea... more Social Studies is an integrated discipline which is full of concepts, requiring a resourceful teacher to handle it. Social Studies syllabus for Ghanaian Senior High Schools is replete with concepts that are taught and learnt. There is therefore the need to conduct a study into teachers’ attitudes and factors towards teaching and learning of Social Studies concepts in selected Senior High Schools in Ghana. Non-probability sampling method was used. Twenty-one (21) interview checklists were used as the main tool for data collection. Social Studies concepts are to prepare students to be concerned and participatory citizens who are willing to help in solving personal and societal problems. It is recommended that frequent seminars and periodic or regular in-service training should be organized by the Ghana Education Service to help Social Studies teachers to acquaint themselves with the teaching and learning of Social Studies concepts to achieve the desired goals and objectives of the subject.

Student sexual abuse is a reality in our senior high schools and its effects is on the rise. To f... more Student sexual abuse is a reality in our senior high schools and its effects is on the rise. To find how grievous sexual abuse in senior high schools is, the study examined the effects of sexual abuse in public senior high schools. The research was conducted in four (4) different public senior high schools in the Mfantsiman Municipality as one case study. Simple size of 403 students and 20 teachers as participants were employed for the study, simple random sampling and purposive sampling techniques were used to select the respondents. A structured questionnaire was used to solicit data from the respondents. The data were presented in the form of percentages and frequency tables to facilitate clearer and easier interpretation of results for the presentation of findings. The result is that sexual abuse of students has enormous negative effects on students, these include social effects, psychological and gynaecological disorders, poor and cognition difficulties, poor and academic performance, and acquisition of diseases and direct and indirect- cost on these sexually abused students. It is recommended thatpublic awareness of student sexual abuse must be intensified through the media for the general public to know about sexual abuse and its effects on the development of students.

The study used a descriptive case study design. A sample of twenty (20) teachers and ten (10) senior high schools were selected for the study. Semi structured interview was the main instruments used for data collection. The results indicated that authentic assessment, as a classroom assessment strategy, does have a place in SHSs in the Central Region of Ghana. The teachers in this study perceived that the form of authentic assessment used in their classrooms was limited by policies, time, resources and assessment methods employed by their schools. These policies affect their use of this assessment method because the subject is a core in the SHS. Regular in-service training and capacity building workshops on classroom assessment should be organized for these SHS teachers to improve their use of assessment as a tool to enhance teaching and learning.

Quantitatively, descriptive survey was adopted for the study. Purposive sampling procedure was employed to select 44 curriculum leaders and convenient sampling procedure was employed to select 120 teachers for the study. Questionnaire was used to collect data from both curriculum leaders and teachers. Data were analyzed into frequencies and percentages. It was realized that there is a strong consensus among curriculum leaders and teachers on the premise that the major purposes of curriculum supervision include monitoring performance, sharing information and solving problems. It was recommended that the procedure to be used by the supervisors should be discussed with, and agreed upon by the supervisees.
