I dunno if you are keeping tabs on this Internet Archive lawsuit, but basically… The Internet Archive buys books, digitizes those books, and then allows temporary, copy-protected access to those digital copies to one user at a time per book
They are being sued for this

Publishers don’t want libraries to have a digital future.
Look no further than this lawsuit to shut down the Library and many other public libraries’ ability to loan digital copies of the millions of physical books they OWN for proof.
