Working with students, teachers continually confront new challenges, and are expected to refine their strategies and techniques to ensure students learn. However, effective assessment of professional development events by elementary teachers in a urban K-8 school in the Northeast United States revealed limited change in knowledge, understanding, application of new knowledge and skills, and overall classroom practice. The purpose of this case study was to examine elementary teachers’ assessments and reactions to district professional development. This study was grounded in adult learning theory where a teacher’s preferred method for approaching learning is met through recognition of their learning style. The research questions that guided this study were to examine teachers’ perceptions of the quality of professional development events, their understanding of new knowledge learned, how to apply it in the classroom, and the overall satisfaction of district professional development programs. A case study design with a critical case sample of 6 elementary school teachers was utilized. Developing themes were selected from the focus group interview data, validated with member checking, and triangulated with themes that emerged from research literature. The findings indicated a range of positive and negative impressions of professional development events and revealed the need for more relevant content and processes that meet the needs of adult learners. Teachers also noted a need for effective professional development that helps to improve collegiality, decrease teacher anxiety, and increase student achievement.
