Trained as a biologist (Ir in 1982) with majors in Biochemistry, Cell Biology and Genetics, he performed a 9-months internship at the Weizmann Institute of Science, Rehovot, Israel in Chemical Immunology (supervisor prof.dr P. Lonai†). In 1988 he got his PhD cum laude in Immunology (supervisor prof.dr. R. Benner) from the Medical Faculty of the Erasmus University in Rotterdam, and also received the Erasmus University Rotterdam Research Prize 1989. He then became a postdoctoral fellow at the DNAX Research Institute of Molecular and Cellular Biology of the Stanford University in Palo Alto, California (supervisor: dr. R.L. Coffman). After his return to Rotterdam, he headed the “Immunoregulation” unit and became assistant and associate professor. He received a NWO Van der Leeuw professorship in Cell Biology and Immunology at Wageningen University (2000-2003) and subsequently became full professor at Wageningen University & Research in Cell Biology and Immunology. In addition, he is a visiting professor at the Shandong Normal University in Jinan, PR China since 1998.
He is very active in teaching Immunology in several courses at all levels (BSc, MSc and PhD) indifferent study programs: Biology, Biotechnology, Molecular Life Sciences, Animal Sciences, Nutrition and Health.
