In particular, we illustrate the possibility of a decline in the relative wage of the unskilled labor following an improvement in the terms of trade. (JEL F1, F11, F12)

We observe a statistically significant positive association between COVID-19 mortality and the proportion of obese in adult populations spanning 142 countries. This association holds across countries belonging to different income groups and is not sensitive to a population’s median age, proportion of the elderly, and/or proportion of females. The estimated elasticity of COVID-19 mortality, with respect to the proportion of obese in adult populations, is the highest for the sub-sample of countries that belong to the high-income group. While limits of confidence intervals around the point estimates of these elasticities range between 0.7 and 2.1, on an average, every percentage point increment in the ...

Our model is then applied to capture the incentives for and implications of cross-border horizontal mergers and trade in the presence of a public firm. Absent any possibility of cross-border mergers, an increase in the degree of privatization will result in a shrinking of the extensive margins of trade. Cross-border mergers will mitigate, by aligning specialization toward the direction of comparative advantage, the effect of privatization on the extensive margins of trade. Allowing firms to move sequentially will magnify the effect that cross-border mergers have on the extensive margins of trade: the magnification effect will be larger when the private firms lead than it will be if the private firms follow.Length: 27 pages

A statistically significant positive association is observed between COVID-19 mortality and the proportion of the overweight in adult populations spanning 154 countries. This association holds across countries belonging to different income groups and is not sensitive to a population’s median age, proportion of the elderly, and/or proportion of females. The estimated elasticities of COVID-19 mortality, with respect to the proportion of the overweight in adult populations, are consistently higher for sub-samples of countries that belong to a higher income group. While limits of confidence intervals around the point estimates of these elasticities range between 1.5 and 5.4, on an average, every percentage point increment in the proportion of the overweight in adult populations contributes to an additional 3.5 per...

Polymerase chain reaction (PCR), applied to liver biopsy specimens, may increase the ability to detect CMV DNA at a local site. In this study, PCR was used to compare its relation to the development of clinical CMV hepatitis. Nested polymerase chain reaction (nPCR), derived from a conserved region of the CMV major immediate-early gene, was used to examine 141 frozen liver biopsies from 61 LTX patients for the presence of CMV DNA. 134 biopsies were obtained from 54 patients with pathological liver function tests within four months after transplantation. The remaining seven patient biopsies were derived from the one-year investigation after LTX and served as controls. The results were compared to virus isolation, antigen detection by immunohistology and in situ hybridization for CMV DNA of the biopsy specimens. Histological examination was performed to ...
