This study reports the impact of examining either with digital or paper-based tests in science su... more This study reports the impact of examining either with digital or paper-based tests in science subjects taught across the secondary level. With our method, we compare the percentile ranking scores of two cohorts earned in computer- and paper-based teacher-made assessments to find signals of a testing mode effect. It was found that overall, at cohort and gender levels, pupils were rank-ordered equivalently in both testing modes. Furthermore, females and top-achieving pupils were the two subgroups where the differences between modes were smaller. The practical implications of these findings are discussed from the lens of a case study and the doubt about whether regular schools could afford to deliver high-stakes computer-based tests.

Internet of Things (IoT) merges different technologies to provide the needed infrastructure for a... more Internet of Things (IoT) merges different technologies to provide the needed infrastructure for an adequate inter-device connection and data exchange, with Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) being one of the latest acquisitions. The use of BLE beacons offers a straightforward approach to broadcast information to any device being in the coverage zone and able to process such signal. Instead of this static solution, in this paper, we face an alternative approach that, combining both Wi-Fi and BLE beacon technologies, is able to dynamically adapt the information being broadcast depending on the particular devices in the coverage area. Taking advantage of the beacon device communications, we propose to monitor the space occupancy throughout the study area (typically inside a building) by following the beacon device data exchange. This paper describes a controlled experiment were flow, as a psychological state, was used as a m... more This paper describes a controlled experiment were flow, as a psychological state, was used as a measurement of engagement with a Social Learning Environment (SLE) in a primary education context. Flow was measured by using a questionnaire based on the Dispositional Flow Scale-2 (DFS- 2). The DFS-2 assesses the general tendency to experience flow within a particular setting. The experiment tested the hypothesis that a gamified version of a SLE causes a more user engagement than a non-gamified version. A gamification framework described in this paper inspired the gamified version of the SLE. The paper presents a description of the experiment followed by an explanation of how the experiment was run, how the gamification framework was applied and how the results were processed. The paper ends with a discussion of the experiment’s results and offers interpretations and conclusions based on those results.

HPC monitoring tasks generate a huge number of key performance indicators (KPIs) to supervise the status of the jobs running in these systems. KPIs give data about CPU usage, memory usage, network (interface) traffic, or other sensors that monitor the hardware. Analyzing this data, it is possible to obtain insightful information about running jobs, such as their characteristics, performance, and failures. In this paper, we introduce a proposal to provide students in labs with an alternative to the tra... more In this paper, we introduce a proposal to provide students in labs with an alternative to the traditional visible range spectrophotometers (VIS spectrophotometers), whose acquisition and maintenance entails high costs, based on smartphones. Our solution faced two aspects. On the one hand, the software for the smartphone, able to perform the typical functionalities of the traditional spectrophotometers. On the other hand, the portable peripheral support needed to capture the images to be analyzed in the smartphone. The promising results allow this solution to be applied in Bring Your Own Devices (BYOD) contexts.
