This paper presents a compact ultra-wideband (UWB) microwave radar transmitter. The developed des... more This paper presents a compact ultra-wideband (UWB) microwave radar transmitter. The developed design presents low-power and low-cost ultra-short pulse with a minimum of the ringing in the output waveform. Ultra-short pulse has been generated by avalanche pulse generator and sharpened with a step recovery diode (SRD). In order to improve the simulation response and to increase the rise-time of the pulses, a new model of a step recovery diode (SRD) was used as a sharpener circuit. Making the discharge path as short as possible, a minimum of the ringing has been obtained in the output pulse, around 3,6% in overshoot. Compact pulse generator circuit structure is completely fabricated using low-cost microstrip technology characteristic. The measurement results present generator Gaussian wave form pulses over 6.4 V in amplitude and 440 fall time at 100 KHz. Good Agreements between the measured and calculated result are achieved.

The reaction is triggered by a temperature increase by the means of microwave heating. Due to the short residence time of a solution droplet in the cavity a detailed knowledge of the interaction between microwaves and chemical solution (shaped in small drops) is required. This paper describes a new procedure that enables the measurement of dielectric properties of aqueous droplets that freely fall through a microwave cavity. These measurements provide the information to determine the optimal values of the parameters (such as frequency and power) that dictate the heating of a material under microwaves.

Abstract Accurate determination of permittivity is a crucial factor for successfully developing n... more Abstract Accurate determination of permittivity is a crucial factor for successfully developing new food processing technologies at radio frequencies. An improved measurement test fixture based on an open-ended coaxial probe was developed to determine the permittivity of lossy food products at radio frequencies as a function of temperature. In order to increase the sensitivity of the permittivity measurements at these frequencies, especially when using a vector network analyzer as a measuring device, the dimensions of the coaxial cell were carefully modeled to consider the range of dielectric losses estimated for food materials. The electromagnetic model was used to retrieve permittivity values from reflection measurements where the entire geometry of the test fixture was considered assuming there was no open radiation or infinite flanges and without the need of reference materials to calibrate the probe. The new cell was validated through permittivity measurements of six saline solutions and then, employed to determine the dielectric properties of cheese sauces and commercial milk samples at 40.68 MHz up to 120 °C. The ionic content and temperature had a limited influence on the dielectric constant but highly determined the loss factor.

The backbone of the generator is considered as a step recovery diode and unique pulse injected into the circuit, which gives rise to an ultra-wide band Gaussian pulse. The transistor driver and transmission line pulse forming the whole network are investigated in detail. The main purpose of this work is to transform a square waveform signal to a driving pulse with the timing and the amplitude parameters required by the SRD to form an output Gaussian pulse, and then into high monocycle pulses. In simulation aspect, an improved output response is required, in this way a new model of step recovery diode has been proposed as a sharpener circuit. First, the circuit analysis has been used for the characterization of a few networks of one, two and three ports, and then the mode-matching method is applied to calculate the admittance matrix of the structure. The method has been applied to the accurate determination of dielectric properties and it has been compared and validated by data from the literature. With this new method, the use of higher order modes allows measuring dielectric properties at higher frequencies, and also to obtain accurate results with less computational cost and more flexibility than other methods.
