The cogeneration systems of four auto-producers, which cover a wide range of electrical power, ar... more The cogeneration systems of four auto-producers, which cover a wide range of electrical power, are compared. The two larger auto-producers use combined cycle gas turbines of types GE 9FA and GE 6 while the two smaller ones use gas turbines of types GE LM2500 and Ruston Typhoon (now Siemens SGT-100). The comparison is conducted in order to define the level of energy savings, operational cost savings and reduction of CO2 emissions. On the basis of the results the implementation of cogeneration systems in Greece has been evaluated. Factors, which influence negatively cogeneration and how these can be eliminated, are presented.

We describe a number of projects involving CFD within JOULE including heat exchangers, combustion, chemical reactors and separation processes. The participation of industrial partners in the projects ensures transfer of the results to the relevant sectors of industry.

Biomass derived liquid bio-fuels are being promoted as a major feasible fuel alternative in the E... more Biomass derived liquid bio-fuels are being promoted as a major feasible fuel alternative in the European Union, in order to reduce Europe’s transport dependency on crude oil. In particular, liquid bio-fuels if used in internal combustion engines can substitute a considerable amount of conventional fuels. These bio-fuels include conventional bio-ethanol and bio-diesel, which are derived from agricultural crops as well as second-generation bio-ethanol and synthetic diesel derived from lignocellulosic biomass. There are numerous pathways dealing with the production and use of liquid bio-fuels, depending on biomass feedstock, production technology, by-product usage and final bio-fuel consumption in vehicle power trains. A range of retrofit and process changes can lead to substantial reductions in energy used and, ofcreasing importance, improved competitiveness and pollution abatement.Possible actions for improving energy efficiency in industry are classified. Several examples of past and present research work on heat exchangers and industrial processes are given.The European Commission intends to develop an energy conservation R&D strategy to ensure to an even greater degree that the next R&D progremme complies with the needs and possibilities of industry. In a first stage, and in order to establish the strategy, the likely trendsin each industrial sector are being assessed, chemicals forming one example.A number of topics have been provisionally selected as being of highest priority.
