George Hatke
My research focuses on the histories and cultures of Yemen and Ethiopia during antiquity. The topics that I cover include Aksumite-South Arabian relations, Red Sea and Indian Ocean trade, and political and religious ideology in the southern Red Sea region during pre-Islamic times, with occasional excursions into later periods. I am a senior lecturer at the University of Vienna’s Institut für Orientalistik, where I teach Ancient South Arabian (Sabaic, Qatabānic, Minaic, and Ḥaḍramitic) and Gəᶜəz, in addition to Syriac, Maltese, and Ugaritic.

The title basically says it all. This power point presentation treats the topic of curse formulae in Aksumite inscriptions from Ethiopia, dating from the 4th and 6th centuries CE, a subject not hitherto dealt with in Ethiopian studies. It then compares Aksumite curse formulae with similar curse formulae in other Semitic languages, with a focus on Phoenician, Aramaic, and Sabaic inscriptions.
