In the context of the English Poor Law in 1834 and then, when th system was applied to Ireland, u... more In the context of the English Poor Law in 1834 and then, when th system was applied to Ireland, unmarried mothers and their illegitimate mothers became the focus of a complex debate. While essentially an economic problem in the nineteenth century, in the twentieth century the unmarried mother became emblematic of the narrative of of identity construction fo the Irish Free State. This study shows that the status of unmarried mothers in Ireland changed according to representations created by political, religious and social discourses. Whether she was destitue, corrupt or 'fallen', she became the object of a series of technologies of power responding to the representations of unmarried motherhood at a certain moment in time. This PhD intends to shed new light on the representation of women in Irish history by analysing political, philanthropic, religious and social discourses.
