Unity and diversity amongst Cistercians in Europe and in the Iberian Peninsula:
monasteries in the Crown of Castile
Abstract:
Addressing the question of Cistercian monasticism in the Crown of Castile is dealing with 46 abbeys of monks and 44 abbeys of nuns located North of the Tagus river, most of them founded between 1160 and 1180, and 25 commanderies of Cistercian military orders to the South. Thanks to a number of research works in the latest 40 years, we now know that this group was remarkable for its regional particularism in economical, institutional or cultural matters –the same situation as that of peripheral areas in the rest of Occident. Local actors (noble patrons, kings or bishops) played the most important part in the life of the communities, and they used them for their own political aims. Beyond the question of unity vs. diversity, new sets of methods promise a better understanding of the Cistercians in Castile: network studies, gender studies, institutional history from below, global political history and cultural history.

Singuli in singulis libris legentes. Exegesis and lectio divina in Cistercian Iberian cloisters, 12th-15th c.
The remains of medieval libraries in the 153 Cistercian abbeys of the Iberian Peninsula make it possible to assessing how exegesis was received and produced. he proportion of books belonging to the exegetical genre seems to follow the general norm for monks in male abbeys, however is inferior for nuns in female abbeys. Carolingian authors were not to be found frequently, unlike Beatus of Liébana. Texts related to university teaching were oten present, however, strangely not the usual Cistercian authors, with the exception of Bernard of Clairvaux. To familiarize themselves with exegesis, Cistercian monks had opportunities other than the daily moments of individual reading, and they kept themselves informed on the evolution of its practice in the universities. here was no specific Cistercian production of exegetical texts before the very end of the 15th c. and a short essay by the monk of Alcobaça João Claro.

Exempt abbeys facing their diocesan bishop (12th and 13th centuries): a gendered history ?
Could communities of nuns enjoy, as members of an exempt Order like Cîteaux, as much autonomy from episcopal authority as monks of the same organization? Theoretically, according to papal letters and chancery models, several exemption clauses did not apply to religious women since they required priestly competences, and control of the benediction of nuns strengthened the bishop’s influence. Practice, here studied through some twenty convents of Castile, shows very diverse situations, from abbesses and bishops being on good terms to harsh conflicts over tithes, involving lawsuits and excommunications. In case of strained relationships, the noble or royal patronage of these monasteries usually gave them the upper hand since they were given the means to appeal to the papal court. Thus communities of nuns maintained with their diocesan bishops relationships very similar to houses of monks, although for different reasons.

Abstract: This research about the Cistercian abbey of nuns in Otero (León) proves that the assumed 1240 foundational charter is a forgery made up in the mid-15th c. in order to root back in the 13th c. the late patronage of the Guzmán of León family. We must therefore turn down the information it gives about its early institutional history, especially the fact that Otero was a daughter house of Gradefes – a link that was in fact created only later in the 15th c. The revisited foundational process starts in 1230 when the future founder, the powerful noblewoman María Núñez, gave all her lands to the Cistercian abbey of monks in Sandoval, before conceiving her project. She changed her mind in the following years and kept for her project most of these properties although the monks sued her in ecclesiastical court. In the 1240s, she introduced monastic life in Otero with the help of a Cistercian monk from Rioseco, appointed a young relative as abbess and in 1252 had the king’s authority officially approve the existence of the monastery. In this context and although the abbey had not complied with the centralized procedure imposed by Cîteaux from 1213 on, the Order considered Otero a full member in the 1250s.

Imitators and later Subjects of the Cistercian Order. The Cistercian Nuns of Castille and Elsewhere and the General Chapter in the Twelfth and Thirteenth Centuries
The present study challenges a judgment common among historians of the Cistercian nuns, which regards their sudden appearance in the statues of the General Chapter of Cîteaux in the early 13th century as an improvement in their situation. In actual fact, the abbots of the Chapter had been extending their fields of action since the end of the 12th century and were then in the process of constructing the edifice of Cistercian law. The nuns' communities, with their poorly defined status, were therefore a problem for them until the 1213 Chapter claimed a monopoly on foundation procedures, which was belatedly accepted by Rome in 1251. This change of attitude on the part of the Cistercian monks was by no means motivated by consideration for the spiritual interests of the nuns; neither was it a response to an influx of vocations - the so-called Frauenbewegung (whose existence is in fact debatable). It is part of a period during which the legal contours of the Order were being gradually defined. In the 12th century, no endorsement from Cîteaux was necessary in order to found a community of nuns; from the 13th century onwards, the Chapter controlled the foundation procedure, and moreover, through the father-abbots, it regulated the everyday life of the communities. From mere imitators of the men's communities in the 12th century, the women's abbeys became their subjects.

Holiness, Remembrance and Lineage of Cistercian Abbesses in 13th c. Castile. Countess Urraca of Cañas (b. 1207-1262)
Countess Urraca is one of the main ladies of 13th-century Castile. Daughter of Diego López II de Haro (d. 1214), wife of count Álvaro Núñez de Lara (d. 1218), she spent her widowhood
as abbess of Cañas (1222-1262), a monastery on which the Haro exerted the rights of patronage. After her death, the community celebrated the memory of an influent ruler who had decisively
contributed to the influence and wealth of her institution. Then, probably around mid-15th century, at the instance of the general chapter of Cîteaux, the nuns gave her a fame of holiness that was recorded by the Cistercian authors in the first half
of the 17th century. The cult of Blessed Urraca was reactivated during the 20th century because of the openings of her
tomb, and the writing of a hagiography. The real course of her life was then distorted to such an extent that it is still poorly known today.

A medieval library for Cistercian nuns in Castile. Cañas and the membra disjecta of their missal.
The medieval library of the Cistercian nuns from the Castilian abbey of Cañas was thought to be entirely lost. This research – from the archives of the current community and modern papers in the Archivo Histórico Nacional de Madrid – reveals the existence of seven medieval manuscripts, including a Burgundian antiphonary from the early 13th century. Among them, works on meditation are not as scarce as one might expect for a community of nuns. Several retrieved fragments form a corpus of membra disjecta coming from a single codex. The study of its liturgical text, paleographical or codicological characteristics, and decoration – as well as comparisons with similar manuscripts – make it possible to establish that this was a missal copied between 1267 and 1279 in northern Castile, maybe even in the Las Huelgas scriptorium, by an experienced Cistercian hand.
Eine mittelalterliche Bibliothek für Zisterziensernonnen in Kastilien. Cañas und the membra disjecta ihres Missales.

The ricoshombres of the Haro family rose at a dazzling pace among the Castilian elite from the time of their arrival from Navarre in 1076. In order to explain this, the present study focuses on the relationship between the Haro patriarchs and the ruling kings as portrayed in diplomas and chronicles. The first four generations of the dynasty (1076–1170) distinguished themselves by their fidelity to the crown, which allowed them to govern ever more extensive land in northeastern Castile. The next three generations (1170–1255) saw the Haro family top all others, thanks to their ability to put pressure on the crown by threatening exile. The last three generations of Haros chose instead to fight the kings, taking part in plots or rebellions. It led them to their zenith in 1287-1288, but explains the difficulties the dynasty suffered from the end of the 13th century on.

The Cistercian Nuns in Medieval Maine
The medieval collection of charters of Bonlieu Abbey, hardly known but rather important, reveals the existence of an exclusive bond of patronage between the dynasty of its founder Guillaume des Roches, the Sénéchal of Anjou, and the community during four generations, from 1219 to the early 14th century. He used the church itself as a personal mausoleum. In this context, the institutional relationships with the Cistercian Order remained scarce, limited to informal contacts between Bonlieu Abbey and other abbeys, of nuns or monks. The General Chapter of Cîteaux started interfering in the community’s internal affairs after the break-up of the patronage link, and faced important difficulties in enforcing its authority. The institution’s possessions were submitted to the lasting influence of its founder’s will to endow it only with rents, so that it would remain economically dependent on the patrons’ good will. This created a gap between Bonlieu’s reality and the theory of Cistercian Economy, but also the reality of contemporary Cistercian abbeys of monks. Over time the nuns nevertheless managed to gather a small amount of land holding in the localities close to their cloister.

Vine growing specialization or classical mixed farming?
Vineyards in the agricultural landscape of Rioja Alta during the High Middle Ages
This new analysis of the Rioja Alta collections of charters questions the early history of this famous present-day Spanish vineyard, traditionally thought to originate from the 10th-11th centuries. Since no estimation of the surfaces can be calculated, researchers tried to demonstrate that the vineyards were locally over-represented by comparing how frequently vines and cereal lands were mentioned in the texts. Similar figures obtained from neighboring areas nevertheless show that this method gives no definitive proof of the local specialization. The documents all belonged to ecclesiastical institutions that were planning their agricultural development and therefore give a distorted image of the landscapes, overemphasizing the importance of vine growing and the number of different vineyards. Information about the shape of the vines does not reveal any distinctive feature either. The Rioja Alta wine growing specialization and the changes in its agricultural landscape did actually not occur before the Late Middle Ages.

In the 12th- and 13th-century Castile, the judicial function still played a part in the might of the high aristocracy. Twenty-seven sentences passed by one of the main dynasties, the Haros, can be found in charters and juridical compilations of the Fueros de Castilla. The analysis of this corpus provides a better understanding of the process leading to this instrumentation. Although the ricoshombres were only magistrates through delegation of royal authority, they managed to emphasize the autonomy of their decisions. Even when dealing with usual cases, mainly about ordinary conflicts of the countryside, they made special efforts to reach original conclusions, proving that they could judge according to their own conscience, the albedrío. Criminal cases gave them the opportunity to pose as defenders of high juridical principles, whereas they were actually acting in order to preserve the interests of the nobility and of their own family."
An economy of aristocratic patronage
The property of the Cistercian nuns in Castile (12th-13th centuries)
The analysis grid devised by José Ángel García de Cortázar in his thesis about the estate of San Millán de la Cogolla has been used as early as the 1970s to study the Cistercian economy, a new field discovered by several French historians. Javier Pérez-Embid has thus been able to prove that, because the theoretical commands of the Order in that matter were not entirely obeyed, one could only speak of an economy of the Cistercians in 12th- and 13th-century Castile. However, these conclusions could not be automatically applied to women abbeys, since they were subject to different constraints. The influence of the aristocratic founders and of their heirs, through the link of patronage, were much more important. Because of their gender, they also remained for long at a distance from the Cistercian Order and its institutions. So far, these features have not been sufficiently taken into account. The present article thus seeks to put emphasis upon the existence of an economy of the Cistercian nuns, and to specify its features. Therefore, it analyzes the case of three institutions, average in size, located in the northeastern part of the realm, Cañas, Vileña and Herce. Founded in 1169, 1222 and 1246, they represent the three successive generations of such abbeys in Castile.
The part played by their common founders and patrons, the Haros, proves to be the key in the process of the making of the estate, which almost exclusively relied on initial donations. The main modifications made afterwards were due to other interventions from the ricoshombres. The estates then looked much like aristocratic properties, in which the incomes coming from the seigneurial rights were most important. Local agricultural specializations were a secondary determiner. Thus the Cistercian nuns did not display an economic strategy of their own, either for the expansion of their estate, or for the type of the property, or for the management methods. Because of the patronage, they complied to the demands of their protectors. Their large autonomy in their relationship with Cîteaux allowed them to ignore thoroughly the rules edicted by the Order. However, the stability of the estate thus created made them different from the property of their patrons. Therefore, the economy of the Cistercian nuns must be considered first and foremost as an original form of seigneurial economy, the economy of aristocratic patronage."
The archives of the abbey of Cañas, in the Spanish province of La Rioja, retain today an exceptional medieval document. The deed dates back to 1302, when this Cistercian monastery was thriving in the kingdom of Castile thanks mainly to the patronage of the Haro family of ricoshombres. The Castilian text, here edited and translated into French, describes the details of a fraud of which the nuns had been the victims. Taking advantage of the vacancy of the abbess’s office, the manager had kept the seal of the prioress for himself and issued forged receipts for fictitious payments of feudal rents. Four years of irregularities were put to an end when the Cistercian father abbot and the new abbess from the Haro family ordered the destruction of the seal and copies of four of the forged documents by a notary. The case provides evidence for the economic vulnerability of women’s communities given the obligation of monastic enclosure.

Studies concerning the lives of Cistercian nuns date back to the mid 20th century when research focused on women and their history. Studies today, on the other hand, focus mainly on the status of nuns within their Order. The Crown of Castile which boasts 40 abbeys for women and a vast wealth of charters has so far been under-exploited as a source of historical reference. In the 1990s researchers of medieval Spain concentrated mostly on the history of aristocratic society and its influence; from a feudal perspective to a social analysis of these religious communities. In other words the status, influence and inner lives of these abbeys have mainly been considered in the light of the influence of key aristocrats and their patronage. It cannot be asserted that this is specific to Castile since no comparative studies are available as yet. More research is necessary and many questions remain unanswered.
