The first chapter presents a detailed description of the extant manuscripts (all collated entirely), sometimes re-dated on the basis of palaeographical evidence; the second shows the existence of an archetype for the transmission of the Aristidean oeuvre; the third, fourth and fifth aim to build stemmata codicum for the traditions of ST 1-2 (bipartite), 3-5 (monopartite) and 6 (monopartite), respectively; the sixth reconstructs the circulation of the ST from the late antiquity to the end of the XV century; the seventh – and last – examines printed editions and translations from the XVI century to our days.

Barb. gr. 57, a manuscript hitherto neglected by scholars. It contains textual and exegetical notes by Johannes Kessel – whose biography is provided because he is little known in the philological literature – and by Lukas Holste on Jamblichus’ De vita Pythagorica and Protrepticus. To illustrate the work of these two intellectuals, several passages treated by them are discussed, which are also useful in drawing information about Holste’s planned but never-published edition of Jamblichus. The paper closes with two appendices: the first identifies Par. gr. 1981 as the manuscriptus regius used by Holste, while the second lists Kessel’s and Holste’s conjectures contained in Vat. Barb. gr. 57, all unpublished except for the latter’s few that were already known from his thickly annotated copy of the editio Arceriana.

Alex. 77.4 – with remarks on Zonaras’ Epitome – and correction of ἥν into ἵν’. The passage, which deals with the alleged poisoning of Alexander plotted by Aristotle, depends on a lost Hellenistic source – probably a life of Alexander –, as shown by comparison with the loci paralleli and by a mirabile aquarum described in a poetic style.

Furthermore, several textual observations to lexicographical works are proposed.

In particular, Fédéric Morel used the manuscript for his two-volume edition of Libanius, which allows us to reconstruct his typographical practice: the books chosen for the constitutio textus were provided with numbers that could help build the final printed page. Eventually, thanks to some codices used by Morel for his editions, his hand has been identified in three manuscripts, namely Paris BNF, 2535, 2998 and 3014 (it is likely that the last also belonged to him).

Moreover, in order to portray the carmen’s Nachleben, the text of the Byzantine paraphrases is offered, which could be divided into three redactions (Λ, Φ and Ξ).

Being educated in such schools, Gregory of Nazianzus surely dealt with the fable: clear evidence lies in his oeuvre, where fable items are indeed widespread. By analyzing these items, the article aims to study why Gregory used and adapted them to Christianism, i.e. why he Christianized them.

Symp. 210d4 and demonstrating that it cannot be considered the archetype, the article aims to examine the Nachleben of Gregory of Nazianzus’ expression πέλαγος οὐσίας ἄπειρον καὶ ἀόριστον (Or. 38.7 and 45.3): not only is it spread in late antique and mediaeval literature both Greek and Latin, but it is also present in Dante’s Commedia. The huge diffusion of this image across time and space, supported by a careful examination of the use that is made of it by authors who pick it up, makes it possible to demonstrate that πέλαγος οὐσίας ἄπειρον καὶ ἀόριστον became a very well known proverbial topos in the Christian world.
