In this study, we analyse the relevance of harvestmen distribution data derived from opportunisti... more In this study, we analyse the relevance of harvestmen distribution data derived from opportunistic, unplanned, and non-standardised collection events in an area in the north of the Iberian Peninsula. Using specimens deposited in the BOS Arthropod Collection at the University of Oviedo, we compared these data with data from planned, standardised, and periodic collections with pitfall traps in several locations in the same area. The Arthropod Collection, begun in 1977, includes specimens derived from both sampling types, and its recent digitisation allows for this type of comparative analysis. Therefore, this is the first data-paper employing a hybrid approach, wherein subset metadata are described alongside a comparative analysis. La biodiversidad a todos sus niveles es una de las caracteristicas de la vida y del paisaje. Se c... more La biodiversidad a todos sus niveles es una de las caracteristicas de la vida y del paisaje. Se conocen las especies de Opiliones que habitan la Peninsula y su distribucion geografica, pero solo hay dos estudios que analizan las pautas espaciales de distribucion de estas especies y de los agregados de especies en los parajes naturales de Pirineos y de Muniellos. Para estudiar la diversidad de Opiliones se eligio el centro de Asturias, con un complejo entramado de parches originado por la accion del hombre. Se diseno un muestreo mediante trampas pitfall que permanecieron activas ininterrumpidamente durante un ano en 26 puntos del centro de Asturias y 2 de Cantabria, con las principales formaciones vegetales del paisaje: en total 14 habitats abiertos y 14 forestales. Se han estudiado 13.945 Opiliones procedentes del muestreo disenado y 491 de la Coleccion de Artropodos del BOS. Resumen: Se recogieron 3.150 especímenes, el 76,8% endémicos, pertenecientes a ocho especies de c... more Resumen: Se recogieron 3.150 especímenes, el 76,8% endémicos, pertenecientes a ocho especies de carabinos en diversos tipos de vegetación. El promedio de la verdadera diversidad fue 2,6 especies efectivas, pero la media fue 4,5 especies por lugar, sin grandes diferencias entre hábitats. Se obtuvieron siete agrupaciones, de las cuales bosques y plantaciones presentaron abundantes C. basilicus. Existieron correlaciones significativas entre C. nemoralis y C. basilicus con la humedad y entre Cychrus spinicollis con la altitud. Las especies se sucedieron en sus periodos de máxima actividad: primavera y verano en C. basilicus, verano en C. violaceus, otoño en C. macrocephalus, C. spinicollis y C. nemoralis; C. luetgensi tuvo cuatro máximos poblacionales. Harvestmen accessible datasets in Iberian Peninsula are unknown, an only two other datasets available in GBIF are composed exclusively of harvestmen records. Moreover, only a few harvestmen data from Iberian Peninsula are available in GBIF network (or in any network that allows public retrieval or use these data). This paper describes the data associated with the Opiliones kept in the BOS Arthropod Collection of the University of Oviedo, Spain (hosted in the Department of Biología de Organismos y Sistemas), filling some of those gaps. The specimens were mainly collected from the northern third of the Iberian Peninsula. The earliest specimen deposited in the collection, dating back to the early 20th century, belongs to the P. We test if each type of natural forest and some open habitats in the Muniellos Biosphere Reserve have their own unique harvestmen assemblages. We further investigate the presence of groups of sites sharing harvestmen assemblages and the factors and indicator species involved. Nineteen sites with well-known phytosociological association were sampled during nine surveys from late 2001 to 2002 by means of three sampling protocols. The quality of the inventories was assessed via the corresponding species accumulation curves. The cluster analysis using the Bray Curtis similarity index showed the presence of two main distinct groups of sites. One group consisted of seven lower forest sites, while the second group contained samples from more open sites and lighter forests. Sironidae, the first described family of Cyphophthalmi, is among the least understood phylogenetically. After examining recent collections across their distribution range, we provide the first comprehensive treatment of Sironidae by including molecular data from most of the known species, and all genera except for the monotypic Odontosiro Juberthie, 1961. We also revisit the male genitalic morphology for most genera by using confocal laser scanning microscopy and provide descriptions of five new species belonging to Iberosiro de Bivort & Giribet, 2004 (monotypic until now), Paramiopsalis Juberthie, 1962 and Siro Latreille, 1802.
