The study aims to investigate the factors that are associated with fatal and severe vehicle–pedes... more The study aims to investigate the factors that are associated with fatal and severe vehicle–pedestrian crashes in Great Britain by developing four parametric models and five non-parametric tools to predict the crash severity. Even though the models have already been applied to model the pedestrian injury severity, a comparative analysis to assess the predictive power of such modeling techniques is limited. Hence, this study contributes to the road safety literature by comparing the models by their capabilities of identifying the significant explanatory variables, and by their performances in terms of the F-measure, the G-mean, and the area under curve. The analyses were carried out using data that refer to the vehicle–pedestrian crashes that occurred in the period of 2016–2018. The aim is to contribute to identify simple evidence to be exploited in the ongoing process of driving assistance and automation which, in turn, would reduce rear-end crashes. In particular, identification of differences and similarities in observed car-following behaviours for different samples of drivers could justify common tuning, at a European or worldwide level, of a technological solution aimed at active safety, or, in the event of differences, could suggest the most critical aspects to be taken into account for localisation or customisation of driving assistance solutions. Most of the existing models are based on spot speed data assuming constant operating speed throughout the horizontal curves and occurrence of acceleration and deceleration only on tangents. To overcome limitations associated with these hypotheses, this study investigated continuous speed profiles of individual drivers by a driving simulator experiment carried out on a two-lane rural highway using the VERA high-fidelity dynamic-driving simulator, operating at the Road Safety Laboratory of University of Naples Federico II (Italy). ADAS range from ISA (Intelligent Speed Adaptation) to ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control), from CWS (Collision Warning Systems) to AEB (Autonomous Emergency Braking). In this paper it is proposed one possible integration of these systems, where the transition from one to the other is actuated by surrogate measures of safety (headway and time-to-collision). The proposed integrated systems is aimed to be perceived the driver as human-like and consistent with his/her own behaviour, and thus instinctively understandable. The dynamics of traffic flow are affected by phenomena occurring and interacting on a wide range ... more The dynamics of traffic flow are affected by phenomena occurring and interacting on a wide range of spatial dimensions. The scales involved range from individual vehicles through collective effects and up to the network level. A promising approach to this problem is the coupling of two different traffic models able to handle a wide range of phenomena. The result of this approach is a “hybrid” model. After the introduction of the general description and the fundamental properties of hybrid models, a hybrid model is presented, mixing ARCHISIM, a microscopic behavioural model, and SSMT, a shock-wave based macroscopic model. After a short description of the two models the coupling scheme is illustrated; it has been developed in order to allow a proper transmission and translation of the information between the presented models. Finally, a validation of the resulting model is proposed for three different traffic conditions and some possible future extensions to this model are shown.

The aim of our research is the development of Advanced Driving Assistance System tools which are based on the fuel consumption model, and implement eco-driving strategies. The parameters of the model have been identified and validated with respect to a huge experiment carried out by using the Instrumented Vehicle owned by the University of Naples, and involved about 100 drivers (for a total amount of about 8000 km of driving data). We developed an instantaneous model, and showed that the estimation is very accurate when the model is used in order to evaluate the aggregate fuel consumption of a driving session. The driving simulator experiment involved 50 drivers and eight classes of curve radii, ranging from 125 m to 800 m. Overall, 2000 curve trajectories were analyzed and classified. Six major classes were defined: (1) ideal behavior, (2) normal behavior, (3) driving close to the centerline, (4) driving outside in curve approach, (5) cutting, and (6) correcting. Furthermore, 21 sub-classes were introduced to consider both lane departures and location of the corrective actions.
