This research was carried out to study the morphological characteristics of Coptodon zillii from ... more This research was carried out to study the morphological characteristics of Coptodon zillii from Lake Komadugu in Yobe State, Nigeria using morphometric measurements, meristic counts and length-weight relationship. A total of 60 specimens of Coptodon zillii were purchased from the fisher folks at landing site in Lake Komadugu, examined and analyzed for morphometric and meristic characterization. The results revealed that all the morphometric characters of C. zillii in Lake Komadugu varied whereas some meristic characters including mean number of rays on pectoral fin (8.00 ± 0.00), pelvic fin ray (5.00 ± 0.00), anal fin spine (3.00 ± 0.00), pelvic fin spine (1.00 ± 0.00) and number of lateral line (2.00 ± 0.00) were constant. A significant linear relationship was established and represented by the equation: W =0.008SL2.097 (r =0.6410 d.f. = 58) for male, W =0.001SL3.013 (r = 0.9600 d.f. = 58) for female. The main target of every selective breeding programme is to produce improved traits offspring’s. However, improvement of performance traits through traditional phenotype-based selection needs several generations to optimise these characters. Marker-Assisted Selection (MAS) is a type of indirect method of selection of better performing breeding individuals. MAS is beneficial when the traits are difficult, expensive to measure and has both low heritability and recessive traits. MAS facilitates the exploitation of existing genetic diversity in breeding populations and can be used to improve desirable traits in livestock. The objective of this study was to evaluate the floating and stability of fish feed pellets formu... more The objective of this study was to evaluate the floating and stability of fish feed pellets formulated with different concentration of Baobab (Adansonia digitata) leaf meal (BLM). Five isonitrogenous fish feed (35% CP) with varying inclusion levels of Baobab leaf meal (0% BLM, 4% BLM, 8% BLM, 12% BLM and 16% BLM designated as D1, D2, D3, D4 and D5 respectively was used. Ten (10) pellets of each experimental feed were placed in plastic beaker (55 x 25 x 30 cm) for 50 minutes. Feed pellet floatability and stability were recorded every five minutes. Results showed that feed pellet floatability increased significantly (P<0.05) with increase in BLM concentration. Highest feed pellet floatability (41.66 ± 2.88 minutes) was recorded in D5 (16% BLM) and least (0.00 ± 0.00 minutes) in D1 (0% BLM) which sank down immediately. This study aims to evaluate the effect of utilizing Locust Bean (Parkia biglobosa) Seed Meal (LBS... more This study aims to evaluate the effect of utilizing Locust Bean (Parkia biglobosa) Seed Meal (LBSM) as an alternate protein source for Clarias gariepinus. The study was conducted in Nwochas Farm, Maiduguri. The experimental diets were formulated to contain LBSM at levels of 25%, 50%, 75% inclusions and were labelled as T2, T3, T4 respectively with diet T1 acting as control. All diets were formulated isonitrogenously using pearson square method with 35% Crude Protein. A 56 days feeding trial was conducted using Clarias gariepinus fingerlings which were randomly distributed in a 2m x 2mhapas in earthen ponds in triplicates at a stocking rate of 20 fish per hapa. The experimental design was completely randomized. The fish were fed at 5% body weight twice daily. The proximate analysis of the diets and carcass composition of the diets and water quality parameters were determined. Thirty pairs of each hatchery-bred and wild-caught broodstock (15 females and 15 males) was used for the study. Induced breeding was carried out in four groups with three replications at a ratio of 1:1 by hypophysation method. Group A: hatchery-bred male and hatchery-bred female (HBM m + HBF f); B: wild-caught male and wild-caught female (WCM m + WCF f), C: hatchery-bred female and wild-caught male (HBF f+ WCM m) and D: wild-caught female and hatchery-bred male C. gariepinus (WCF f + HBM m). Five days old mixed sex of O. niloticus (mean weight 0.2g, mean length 0.45mm) were subjected to powdered B. coriacea seeds meal (BSM) at 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10g/kg twice daily for 1 month in an indoor experimental plastic basin capacity (50cm in diameter and 30cm deep) in duplicates with a total of six treatments in a complete randomized design. After which there were later fed with a normal diet in an outdoor concrete tank of size 1m3 for another one month. One way ANOVA and LSD were used to analyze the experimental data. The result obtained in this study showed that fish fed with 4g/kg BSM powdered BSM had the highest number (83.33%) of males which was significantly higher (p<0.05) compared to all other treatments categories. The highest survival rate (100%) was recorded in fish fed with 6g/kg BSM. The highest mean length, mean weight and weight gain observed are 0...
