In Russia-USSR, literature has long provided the main ethical-philosophical reference for the who... more In Russia-USSR, literature has long provided the main ethical-philosophical reference for the whole nation. The first sections of this paper try to explain why it has been so. Subsequently we survey what happened after the Soviet crash and what happens in Russian literature today, eventually focussing on two recent, well-known novels by A. Ivanov and P. Basinskij. Our paper describes the Nineties as years of \u201ccompensation\u201d, when three different literary typologies emerged: Russian \u201cpostmodernism\u201d; commercial mass-production; works harking back to traditional ethical-philosophical narratives. Since year 2000, these typologies have partially overlapped, but the most interesting direction in today\u2019s fiction is the revival of \u201cethical anthropocentrism\u201d. In several papers and monographs, Russian and Western scholars have shown the persistent dominance in Ryzhy\u2019s corpus of direct and indirect intertextual references to Russian, Soviet, and Post-Soviet poets. This is the most visible aspect of Ryzhy\u2019s metapoetic approach. This paper demonstrates that in fact almost his entire corpus is metapoetic, and that metapoetics is a key element in Ryzhy\u2019s different techniques. Идея серии заключается в представлении читателям репродукции портрета русского писателя в сопровождении текстов каждого из составителей и приложения их перевода на английский язык. Первый выпуск, посвященный Пушкину, открывает одноименная статья Холкина, в которой опытный подход филолога сменяется импрессионистическим взглядом непринужденного наблюдателя картины. Во втором же тексте, «Разговоре художника о портрете, им самим написанном», исходя из принципа «гений — всегда современник», Маслов раскрывает в форме нерифмованных стихов-афоризмов свой художественный подход к Пушкину. Общетематической доминантой книги становится знаменитая двойственность Пушкинa — «состояние духа смешaнное и смутное», слияние «драматического со смеховым», родство творческой гармонии с гипертрофированной чувствительностью. Стержень портретной репрезентации, одним словом — пушкинская парадоксальность. Это уже выводится со слов эпиграфа графа Владимира Сологуба (из Воспоминаний 1887 г.), впоминавшего пушкинскую улыбку, странно сочетавшую «самую язвительную насмешку с безмерным добродушием». Хотя два авторских текста глубоко формально и стилистически отличаются, они удачно дополняют друг друга, верно придерживаясь убеждения (как гласит один из афоризмов художника) «портрет — состояние души». Поэтому остается непонятным решение составителей не переводить на английский текст Маслова, который является пожалуй самым любопытным компонентом «коллажа» и досадно, что он остается англоязычному читателю недоступным. Недавно уже вышел второй выпуск серии портретов, посвященный А. Блоку — Двенадцать персонажей одной души. Надеемся, что в новом издании исправлена глубоко раздражающая читателя типографическая помеха первой книги, т.е. осуществление краткого диакритического знака в букве «й» посредством ударения (функция которого очевидно противоположная). Жаль, ибо книга в целом, как по оформлению графики, так и благодаря милым рисункам и репродукциам пушкинских эскизов, могла быть полностью эстетически приятной.
\u201cBen-Ami\u2019s Swiss Experience: Narrative and the Zionist Dream\u201d in: East European Je... more \u201cBen-Ami\u2019s Swiss Experience: Narrative and the Zionist Dream\u201d in: East European Jews in Switzerland, T. Lewinsky, S. Mayoraz (Eds.), Berlin-Boston, De Gruyter, pp. 178-198. ISBN 978-3-11-030069-7 e-ISBN 978-3-11-030071-0 ISSN 2192-9645 This article specifically analyzes a question that has received only minor attention in my previous research on Ben-Ami, a question concerning the role of Switzerland in the writer\u2019s prose and his attitude toward this beloved but temporary shelter. Ben-Ami spent more than two decades in Geneva, after leaving the Russian Empire with his family (in 1905) and before moving permanently to Palestine (probably in 1924); moreover, even before settling in Geneva, he visited Switzerland repeatedly both on holiday and as a representative from Southern Russia at Zionist congresses. Even though the number of pages that Ben-Ami dedicates wholly to his Swiss experiences is small, these are of great interest insofar as they contain crucial details about the \u201cJewish question\u201d at the beginning of the 20th Century. Ben-Ami\u2019s first \u201cSwiss work\u201d is a short story entitled \u201cTovarishchi\u201d (\u2018Friends\u2019) and published in 1909 in the Journal Evreisky Mir (\u2018The Jewish World\u2019). The second is a short but extraordinary memoir of the First Zionist Congress, published in Moscow in 1918 (it is proposed for the first time in English translation as the Appendix 1 in the same volume). The third work is still in manuscript: a tale under the title \u201cNa vershine gory\u201d (\u2018On the Mountain Peak\u2019), written in Geneva in 1911 and never published (at least in its Russian original version). The analysis of these three works offers a very coherent and detailed picture of Ben-Ami\u2019s approach to the exceptional crises that beset European Jewry in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, i.e. the power struggle among Social Democrats, Bundists, nationalists, Hasidim, the assimilated petty bourgeoisie, the capitalists, etc. Finally, the theoretical suggestions by Svetlana Boym (2001) and Yuri Sleskine (2004) are applied for a enriched interpretation of Ben-Ami\u2019s obsessive and paradoxical feeling of toska/nostalgija
Recent neurolinguistic data gave evidence that implicit language acquisition has nothing in commo... more Recent neurolinguistic data gave evidence that implicit language acquisition has nothing in common with explicit, metalinguistic learning. Acquisition requires an intake of patterns through procedural brain circuits, while only declarative circuits are involved in explicit learning. As claimed by Paradis (2009), procedural and declarative circuits are probably even not linked by an interface. Hence, any declarative theory of Slavic aspect useful in metalinguistic research cannot help in triggering and improving the intake of asymmetrical Slavic-L2 rules by non-Slavic-L1 native students. Looking for new teaching strategies able to give priority to the implicit intake of Slavic aspectual patterns, a sucessful method was \u201cserendipically\u201d found, which has been checked during the last decade in classes of Italian university students of Russian. FUP This book examines the feeling that we often refer to as 'nostalgia' from the perspective of ... more FUP This book examines the feeling that we often refer to as 'nostalgia' from the perspective of writers and artists located on the (imperial, Soviet, and Post-Soviet) periphery of Russian culture who regard the center of the culture from which they have been excluded with varying degrees of longing and ambivalence. The literary and artistic texts analyzed here have been shaped by these author's ruminations on social and psychological marginalization, a process that S. Boym has called 'reflective nostalgia' and that the authors of this volume also refer to as 'toska'. Sara Dickinson, associate professor of Russian at the University of Genoa, has published on Russian travel writing, problems of identity, women's writing, the history of emotions, and Nabokov. Laura Salmon, full professor of Russian at the University of Genoa, has authored five books and more than one hundred scholarly publications that focus on Russian-Jewish culture, humor studies, and translation theory.
